Title: Macfeat Laboratory School Lead Teacher

The Macfeat Laboratory School at Winthrop University, founded in 1895, functions as a research laboratory where innovative approaches in early childhood education are investigated. As one of the longest continuous operating laboratory schools in the nation, Macfeat serves as an education site for prospective teachers and other professionals that work with young children.

Macfeat strives to meet the needs of a diverse population of learners (ages 3 to 5 years in full- and half-day programs) while exploring ways to better meet the challenges of educating young children in the 21 st

century. Macfeat is nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Major Responsibilities :

Serve as the lead teacher in a full-day NAEYC accredited kindergarten classroom

Plan and implement the laboratory school curriculum

Supervise university students assigned to the classroom

Collaborate with Winthrop University faculty and the laboratory school director to build and sustain close relationships between the school and the university

Assist in the professional development of graduate and undergraduate students employed by the laboratory school

Conduct parent conferences

Participate in professional organizations and meetings

Demonstrate innovative ideas in early childhood and collaborate on research with faculty members

Other duties as assigned by the director

Required Qualifications:

 Master’s degree in early childhood education, child development or closely related field required

Thirty six college semester hours (undergraduate or graduate) in the field of early childhood education, child development, early childhood special education, or elementary education from an accredited institution required (see http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation for acceptable institutions)

Successful teaching experience with three, four and/or five year olds (with preference as lead teacher)

Teacher licensure/certification in early childhood, early childhood special education, or elementary education (K-6 certification) preferred

Knowledge of current issues and trends in early childhood education

Evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills

Employment Conditions : A 10-month non tenure-track appointment
