The Bachelor of Arts in psychology at Winthrop covers subjects ranging from child and adult development to social and biological bases of behavior to psychological disorders. It also includes the opportunity to study such applied areas as psychology of women, ecological psychology, exceptional child, and organizational psychology. The B.A. level psychology graduate receives a well-rounded liberal arts education and is also trained in a variety of skills, including those skills used by psychologists to acquire new knowledge. Working closely with faculty instructors and mentors, students may apply their abilities to research, internships, community service, and other experiences. Program The psychology program consists of 36 semester hours in psychology, in addition to the university’s general education requirements. Five courses are required for psychology majors, including two introductory courses (one which specifically provides an introduction to psychology as a discipline and profession and helps students begin to develop possible career paths), a twocourse research sequence, and a senior capstone course. Working with an academic advisor, students can choose their remaining psychology classes from a range of offerings that reflect the diversity of both the discipline and the faculty’s expertise. This personalized system is designed to expose students to a broad range of areas in psychology, while allowing flexibility for students to focus on their own interests and goals. Internships/co-ops Students can choose to participate in an internship or psychology field experience in order to complement their classroom learning with real world application. Internships are available at a variety of human and social service locations throughout York County and the metro-Charlotte area. Interns are typically placed at sites with licensed practitioners to assure quality supervision. Majors may also receive credit for other field experiences in business, human or social service, educational, and other sites. Students work with both a faculty advisor and on-site supervisor, who help students consider their personal strengths and career options Research Experience Winthrop psychology faculty are actively engaged in research with human children and adults, as well as with other animal species. Students have the opportunity to conduct their own studies as part of the research sequence and to work closely with faculty mentors on research projects for course credit. Many of our students present their research at professional conferences, often with financial assistance from the university. Students are also encouraged to publish their work in professional journals. Research experience provides students with highly valued skills for the job market and excellent preparation for graduate training. Student Organizations The department hosts two active organizations, which provide membership, friendship, and leadership opportunities. All students are welcome to join the Psychology Club. Students with a strong academic record are also invited to join Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology. The two groups work together to organize informational meetings, guest speakers, movie nights, academic tutoring, and social events for the department. The department and its student organizations also serve community agencies through volunteer work and fundraising projects. Becoming involved in student groups is yet another way for students to engage with peers and faculty outside, as well as inside, the classroom.
