Central DuPage Hospital Simulates Shooting at HEC
Several agencies recently collaborated in an active shooter simulation organized by Central DuPage
Hospital at the Homeland Security Education Center at
COD. Eight paramedic students from CDH participated in the exercise, which included assistance from COD’s
Police Department, COD Emergency Medical Services students, DuPage Public Safety Communications
(DuComm), and the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System
(MABAS). Following the “shooting” in the HEC’s street scene lab, CDH students assessed and triaged victims before transporting them to the College’s simulation hospital in the Health and Science Center. Click for more photos and a video of the exercise.

Living Leadership’s Overnight Adventure
Last weekend, Student Life’s Living Leadership Program hosted 30 students from 14 different COD clubs and organizations on an overnight retreat to the Pretty Lake
Adventure Center in Michigan. Participants cooked their own dinners over campfires and “survived” an evening without electricity and running water! The next Living

Wine Appreciation Certificate
COD”s Wine Appreciation
Certificate is for students with food industry career aspirations or for casual wine enthusiasts.
The program provides students with a strong foundation for pursuing a number of industry certifications, said Hospitality
Coordinator Mary Beth Leone . “We’ve designed these courses to layer information on various regions and grape varieties,” she said. “At the same time, courses that bookend the certificate program can be taken alone, offering noncertificate seekers an opportunity to investigate wine as a personal interest.” Read More
ACE Certification Courses Offered this Fall
COD will offer two computer forensic courses this fall that will prepare students to test for the AccessData Certified
Examiner (ACE) credential. “Our first class offerings last spring were hugely successful, with a near-perfect pass rate for the ACE credential,” said Sam Shamsuddin , assistant professor of CIT and CIS. Read More

COD Chemistry students Cody Castle of Bloomingdale and Ina Furxhi of Carol Stream, who are participating in prestigious summer internships at
Northwestern University’s Materials Research Science and
Engineering Center. Castle is conducting a theoretical investigation of different methods for sequestering carbon dioxide, which is the main contributor to climate change.
Furxhi is exploring different technologies that use algae processes for making biofuels and trying to determine which approach is most cost-effective. Castle and Furxhi are at Northwestern thanks in part to a grant through the
College Foundation’s Resource for Excellence program.

COD Welcomes New Ensemble Directors
The College welcomes new Chamber Orchestra Director Alison
Gaines and new Percussion Ensemble Director Ben Wahlund .
Gaines is currently assistant conductor of the Elmhurst Symphony
Orchestra where she also serves as principal bassist. Wahlund is an award-winning composer, educator and performer who earned a master’s degree in Music Theory and Composition and a
Performance Certificate in percussion from Northern Illinois
