College Lecture Series Presents: Ari Shapiro The McAninch Arts Center will present National Public Radio White House Correspondent Ari Shapiro on Tuesday, Nov. 13, as part of the College of DuPage Lecture Series. The presentation will take place at 7:30 p.m. in SRC 2000. Ari Shapiro reports on the White House for NPR with a focus on national security and legal affairs. His stories appear in a variety of NPR's news magazines, including All Things Considered and Morning Edition, where he is also a frequent guest host. Shapiro began covering the White House in 2010 after five years as NPR's Justice Correspondent, during which time his coverage of Justice Department policies and controversies chronicled one of the most tumultuous periods in the department's history. American Chemical Society Honors Richard Jarman College of DuPage Chemistry Professor Richard Jarman has been selected as one of the 2013 recipients of the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Environmental Improvement Award for Incorporating Sustainability into Chemistry Education. The awards recognize individuals and organizations that have made exemplary contributions to the incorporation of sustainability into chemical education. Jarman was recognized for his work with students as part of a consortium of contributors – including Packer Engineering in Naperville, Argonne National Laboratory and the city of Naperville – to the new Green Fuels Depot in Naperville. “I am very excited at the opportunity provided by this award to showcase the Green Fuels Depot work on a national stage,” Jarman said. “The award reflects the hard work of many students who contributed to this worthwhile endeavor.” Read More Paint It Black Photography students shoot a portrait at the recent "Paint It Black" session at COD. The annual assignment is part of the College's Photography 1101 class taught by Professor Terry Vitacco. Donning black and toting unusual props, the budding photographers were on location in the Student Services Center where they were charged with taking spontaneous personality portraits. More photos! Psychedelics in the 21st Century COD will host a series of presentations titled, "Psychedelics in the 21st Century," on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in BIC 3810. This free event will feature top minds in the burgeoning field of psychedelics, and will include recent clinical research on these substances as therapeutic adjuncts to psychotherapy for the treatment of addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and existential distress at the end of life. Read More Kudos to…members of the Rotaract Club of College of DuPage who hosted a successful fundraiser with the Glenbard West Interact Club. Between Oct. 21 and 27, the students ran a Haunted House at the Glen Oak Country club. As a result, the clubs will benefit from more than $2,000 split equally between them. In addition, the event was such a success, they’ve been asked back for next year! The COD Rotaract is service club is affiliated with Rotary International and is sponsored by Glen Ellyn Rotary. Rotaract Club fosters leadership and responsible citizenship, encourages high ethical standards in business, and promotes international peace and understanding. More Kudos to…the team at WDCB 90.9 FM, who recently completed a very successful on-air fall pledge drive. The station achieved more than 102 percent of its goal, raising $142,244, which is a 103.8 percent increase over last year’s total of $70,799. Chris Miller Hosts Fermilab Physics Slam Associate Speech Professor Chris Miller will moderate Fermilab’s “Physics Slam” at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, in Wilson Hall’s Ramsey Auditorium in Batavia. In the tradition of poetry slams and comedy slams, five physicists duke it out jargon-free to give the clearest, most entertaining presentation on physics-related subjects. Miller, assistant director of the College’s Forensics Team and host of “That Beepin’ Show,” a comedic video digest about student life at College of DuPage, will emcee the event. Miller, who also has experience performing stand-up comedy, plans to bring that same sense of fun and humor to what is often considered a pretty dry subject. “I want to make physics fun and accessible for the rest of us fools,” said Miller.
