MANAGEMENT
FACILITY MANAGEMENT
Facility managers are responsible for coordinating the physical
workplace with the needs of both the workers and the organization
itself. They manage millions of dollars in corporate assets, such as
buildings, equipment, furniture, artwork, telephone systems and
computer networks. Depending on the company, a facility manager may
have the title of building manager/supervisor, property manager or chief
engineer. Facility managers must possess good listening, writing and oral
communication skills. In addition, they must interact well with employees;
possess technical skills related to facility planning, design, operations
and maintenance; and have the ability to make logical decisions while
under pressure. The facility manager typically is a generalist who
supervises or hires the specialist.
The Facility Management program at College of DuPage provides
fundamental and advanced education and practice in a variety of
management and business subjects that prepare graduates for successful
entry into the workforce. Students develop skills in a range of subjects
including blueprint reading, building materials, construction methods,
safety and surveying, as well as a variety of systems used in facilities, such
as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, telecommunications
and security systems. In addition, students gain knowledge in businessrelated subjects such as codes and contracts, estimating, budgeting and
supervision. A good understanding of facility management is also useful
for individuals working as administrative assistants, architects, HVAC
specialists, building and grounds personnel, managers/supervisors, interior
designers, real estate property managers or human resource personnel.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the median yearly
wage for facility managers was $77,890 in 2010, with top-earners
bringing in $135,300. The BLS also predicts a 15 percent increase in
the employment of facility managers from 2010 to 2020. Employment
growth is expected as organizations increasingly realize the importance of
operating their facilities efficiently. Facility managers will also be needed
to plan for natural disasters, ensuring that any damage to a building will
be minimal and that the organization can get back to work quickly. In
addition, facility managers will be in demand due to increasing focus on
environmental impact and energy efficiency. For more information and
