Closing the chasm between education
and practice
Vickie brought attention to the things
going on in Illinois.
A. I.O.M. recommendations: a call
for partnership
 Standard 4: Increase
IONL State Conference focused on IOM
– what education and practice should be
doing. 80% BSN by 2020

Evidence based practice
Respond/ evaluate research
Understand their role in quality
assurance
Role in improving outcomes
Need to be able to write
effectively
Why get BSN at your school?
(Elmhurst)
 Consolidating completion
option
 Online offerings
 Major changes to gen eds
 Bridge to MSN available for
ADNs with another bachelors
degree
(Benedictine)
 One year program (after prereqs)
 Maintaining face-to-face
classes
 Revising the Friday PM, all
day Saturday scheduling to
shorter Saturday sessions.
 Caring/ convenient approach a lot is done for them
 Satellite sites
Discussion continued around the
difficulties of reserving clinical sites due
to saturation of education providers.
There is also concern about
preparedness when some sites don’t
allow students to issue meds or do
charting.
Another issue we’re experiencing at
C.O.D. is that our clinical affiliates are
only hiring nurses with bachelors

degrees.
Does the curriculum match the job
today?
Employment is not required to enter a
BSN program, although most do. They
do have to be licensed. (Benedictine)
However, it’s not unheard of that a
student may not have actually worked
prior to continuing their education.
4.
Opportunities and innovations
A. Curriculum revisions
All
We are embarking on a complete
curriculum review. We welcome input
on things to incorporate. What models
do you use in your program?
Elmhurst (pre-licensure):
 Hybrid (equal time online as in
classroom)
 Working hard to get away from
lecture; moving to case based
learning
 Apply what they’re read; data
shows students learn better
when not passive
 Trying to inegrate clinical
experiences in lectures
 Multiple choice exams are
used, as well as other grading
methods
 Pass/fail used in clinical
Benedictine (degree completion):
 Aligning courses with
essentials of accrediting body
 Link ANA standards with
syllabus
 Use Desire to Learn as the
couse platform

Also try to get away from
lecture
No multiple choice exams; a
lot of writing papers
We have received approval for a 4-bed
simulation hospital renovation. Vickie
shared the floor plan (phase 1). Phase 2
will include a long term care and
apartment environments.
B. Simulation
Signing ceremony on Nov 14th with
Governor State University for a 3+1.
C. Educational advancement
opportunities
We have a 3+1 with NIU, but they are
still requiring RN practice; hoping we
can negotiate that point given the
climate of the job market and students
wanting to move to the next educational
step before employment.
Working with office of research on
developing a geriatric certificate for
nursing; currently doing needs analysis
and online research.
D. Geriatric certificate
Promote student success of students in
our program. Goal is by next June, we
will have a recommended program of
study.
 Courses that students take in
high school that prepare them
for success in our program.
(medical terminology, etc.)
 At least 3 are high school
districts
 Grant funded
