Paper Machine and Laboratory Safety Rules
Safety is of paramount importance in the operation of the WIST/UW-Stevens Point laboratories, pilot paper plant
and associated equipment. In order to assure the safety of WIST/UW-Stevens Point personnel, clients and
customers, and anyone else who may be present in the facilities, campus policy and related safety rules must be
followed.
Be advised that the following rules are general and the minimum safety standards required for your presence in
the facilities. At all times, it is your responsibility to act in a safe and prudent manner based on the activity. You
must also comply with all verbal rules and instructions given by WIST staff. If at any time you have a question
about these rules or anything in the facilities contact a WIST staff person immediately.
At all times:






Safety glasses must be worn
Closed-toe shoes must be worn, steel-toes safety shoes are preferred
No tank tops or sleeveless tops are permitted
Horseplay and/or running is not permitted
Food and beverages are not permitted in the laboratories and paper machine area
Tobacco use is prohibited in all areas on campus: UW-Stevens Point is a tobacco-free campus
When equipment is running or maintenance is being done:







Hearing protection must be worn
Long pants must be worn when equipment is running, maintenance is being done, or chemicals are being
used
Jewelry, including watches and all rings, is not permitted
Loose hair must be tied back and above the shoulders
No loose clothing is permitted: tuck clothing in, including ties and drawstrings
Avoid nip and pinch points
Yield to machine operations crew and laboratory workers – do not obstruct their access to equipment
Trial work:


All chemical or furnish adjustments and additions must be performed by WIST/UW-Stevens Point
personnel only
All machine and support equipment must be operated by WIST/UW-Stevens Point personnel only
