American Symbols
We have been learning about symbols of
the United States this week. The
kindergarten social studies content
statement says:
History 4 – Nations are represented by
symbols and practices. Symbols and practices
of the United States include the American
flag, Pledge of Allegiance, and the National
Anthem.
The content elaboration says:
H04 – Kindergarten children learn what it
means to be a citizen of the United States
and how a citizen shows respect for the
nation. Children begin to recognize the
symbols of the United States and understand
that nations are represented by symbols and
practices. The American flag is the most
commonly recognized symbol. Children also
begin to learn about traditional practices of
citizenship, like reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance and singing the National Anthem.
This week we learned about the American
flag. We read books about the American flag,
wrote about what we learned during shared
writing time, and painted the American flag.
Hopefully your child has been noticing the
American flag when you are out and about in
the community.
Next week we will be working hard to
memorize the Pledge of Allegiance. Each
child will receive a mini-book called Pledge to
the Flag. We will be doing lots of activities
with the books. The kids will color the books
and we will highlight words we know in the
Pledge of Allegiance. Students will practice
reading the Pledge of Allegiance using one of
their fingers to point to each word on the
page. Please practice reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance at home. In a few weeks I will be
assessing the students on their ability to
recite the Pledge of Allegiance in an
individual setting. Thank you in advance for
your support!
