COD Service Learning Benefits Students, Community
Sonography student Julie Lehocky (above, sitting) holds
infant Lily with her mom Emma during a recent service
learning experience. Each year, hundreds of COD students
are gaining, crucial real-world experience, enhanced
learning and a greater sense of satisfaction by participating
in service learning experiences across a broad range of
disciplines and venues. “Service Learning at COD is more
than volunteering,” said Sara Kirby, Career Services
Assistant Manager. “The program involves a teaching style
that engages learning in the classroom through hands-on
service in the community. Students receive a fresh
perspective on the world.” Click here to watch a Multimedia
Services Service Learning video and here to read more.

Manufacturing Coordinator Jim Filipek said the certificate
should interest a wide range of prospective students. “The
CNC Operations certificate provides a more targeted

MPTV students AJ Tanedo (left) and Matt Miltonberger
shoot a segment for a set of videos commissioned by the
COD Foundation. Students in the Commercial Video
Production class wrote the scripts, conducted interviews,
scouted locations, shot and edited footage, and created
graphics for “Support COD Students and Change Lives”
and “How COD Donors Are Making a Difference.” The
“Making a Difference” video also includes original music
written and performed by COD students Anthony Perry and
Toney Reyes. “Jennifer Piehl and I have offered this class
for seven years, but this was the first time we worked with an
internal client,” said MPTV Professor Tony Venezia. “We
pitched the idea of our students collaborating with the
Foundation, and within 15 minutes, we had a handshake.”
