The Westerville Division of Police Youth Police Academy (YPA) is for students with a genuine interest in law enforcement as a career. The experience begins with the application process and, if accepted, continues with participation in a one-week academy. Information received from the application will be verified to ensure the student meets the participation criteria prior to being accepted.
Students must be 14 years of age and have completed the eighth grade. The application for participation must also include their current grade card (at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA to qualify) and letter of recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, or principal, as well as an endorsement from their school resource officer.
The curriculum focuses on a variety of law enforcement topics, utilizing both classroom and practical scenarios to educate students. The program also relies on team building and working together as a measure of success.
Cadets are assigned to a squad with a squad leader. Each squad works together as a unit and competes in several program exercises.
Upon successful completion of the academy, students will have an opportunity to join “Post 29,” the Westerville Division of Police Explorer
Program.
