UWSP Disability & Assistive Technology Center The Different Alternative Text If you are on a UWSP campus PC computer you can listen to this page using a text-to-voice form by following these steps: Start -> All programs -> UWSP Application Center -> Categories (upper left corner) -> Utilities -> Click RUN on Premier Literacy Suite 15.0. Click on the “Lunch pad” on the Premier Tool bar, and then highlight the text you want to read and use the “Reader” tool or use the “Talking Pointer” tool. Please watch the video to learn how to do these steps. What alternative text forms are used by UWSP DAT Center? - Alternative texts are available in three ways: 1.) An audio form is one type of alternative text. The audio forms come from Learning Ally. You will be notified through Disabilities Services if you qualify for these services from Learning Ally. Below is a guideline that explains qualifications for Learning Ally. BookShare is another form of text-to-voice &/or audio files of books. 2.) A second way of receiving an alternative text is by obtaining an e-file from the publisher. It may take up to 3-4 weeks to receive these e-files. This process would be done if your books are not available in audio form or if you do not qualify for Learning Ally or BookShare. We also request from publishers if the books are not supported by Learning Ally or BookShare. 3.) Scanning the text is the last form of alternative text. This is the last option the AT Program will do if the books do not come in audio or e-file forms. The scanned text can be read with two programs the AT lab provides called Premier and Kurzweil. If you have your own program, we will help you scan your book and then post it for you to use with your program. If we need to scan a text, the office will need you to bring a copy of the class syllabus and the book for scanning if no file is available. Your needs for these different types of alternative texts will be decided at the meeting between you and the Assistive Technology (AT) coordinator with Disabilities Services accommodation referral. We cannot guarantee that late requests will be fulfilled in time for the start of the semester, so the sooner the AT office has your request the sooner we can work on filling your request. Guidelines to Qualify for Learning Ally or BookShare Membership For students who are certified as legally blind or students with print disabilities, the accommodation of books as a wave download or RichText, text-to-voice file can be used. Disabilities Services will determine if you qualify for Learning Ally &/or BookShare. Most students that qualify are visually or printed (dyslexic) disabled. If you qualify for these services, you will make an appointment with the Assistive Technology (AT) office to help you sign up for Learning Ally membership. If you would like to use BookShare, you will be helped to sign up for an Individual membership. Learning Ally is supported by a university membership or you may purchase an individual membership. Books that are not available from Learning Ally or BookShare, will be obtained in other alternative text forms. You will need to make an appointment with the Assistive Technology Coordinator by emailing assisttech@uwsp.edu, or calling 714-346-4980 during office hours, 8am-4:30pm Monday – Friday to set-up these accommodations. * Boxed below are two examples of the guidelines publishers have in place for universities to follow. VERIFICATION AND AGREEMENT I verify and agree that: 1. The requesting school or disabled student has purchased the above named printed work. 2. The student is registered to take or attend the above course requiring the use of the Title. 3. The student has a disability that prevents him or her form using the Title. 4. The disability has been verified by the school’s accessibility services department. 5. The student and the school will not use or further distribute or copy the electronic files for the Title for any other purpose. 6. In using the electronic files provided by the Publisher, the disabled student, the College Disabled Student Services Office, or other student official, will abide by the Copyright Law of the United States of America. This file is being provided for use by one student with a disability at your institution, who is the specific subject of this request.
