M A Y 1 3 T H 2 0 1 6 What’s new in Room 216? MRS. O’CONNOR’S 3RD GRADE CLASS z Ask A 3rd Grader In Our Class About... z “King Spencer” has a passion for drumming! Check out those sticks! In Reading and Writing Workshop we spent some time reviewing concepts that we have covered throughout the year. During “Read Aloud” time we practiced making inferences and predictions using the text The Summer According to Humphrey. Tell someone at home the main ideas of this book! We also began our final technology project of the school year....creating an electronic scrapbook which features many events that have happened throughout our lives as 3rd Graders! What have you included so far in your book? In Math we talked about tools and units that perimeter can be measured in. These included: inches, feet, meters, centimeters, kilometers, yards and miles. We also discussed the standard unit for measuring area (1 square unit.) Next week we will be focusing on measurement as it pertains to time, volume and mass. Spencer demonstrated some impressive problem solving strategies this week in math! nnn In word study we reviewed the concept of synonyms and using a tool called a thesaurus to help us use descriptive words in our writing. We also spent some time learning about homonyms and homophones. Show someone at home the homonym jokes we viewed on YouTube! Upcoming Events &Reminders: SPRING MAP ASSESSMENT: Our class will take the Reading MAP Assessment in the afternoon on Monday, May 23rd. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN MAY: There will not be an official classroom, volunteer schedule sent out for the month of May however we will need lots of helpers to go along with us on the May 31st Field Trip as well as for the Super Games event planned for Friday, June 3rd (3rd Grade will be attending Super Games in the AM). Thanks for all you do! FEILD TRIP CHAPERONES: If you signed up to chaperone our field trip to The Columbus Museum of Art, scheduled for May 31st, please be sure you complete the background check ASAP. (See yellow information sheet sent home earlier in the week, if you need another copy just let me know!)
