In 2007, Methodist University continued its pursuit of a culture of excellence. We celebrated the completion of a new Fitness Center and a Science Building, then began needed renovation work on our four oldest residence halls. We created the Methodist University Experience to better prepare our newest students for academic success and made improvements to our registration and advising process. We added three new endowed professorships in English, History, and International Business and a graphic design major. We increased financial assistance for our students, adding five new scholarships. In our second year as a University, we celebrated the first graduates of our Master of Business Administration and Master of Justice Administration programs. Our students were busy making a difference as well. Student athletes hosted and volunteered in Special Olympics events and participated in “Cans Across the Conference,” donating over 1,500 canned goods to needy families. Elementary education majors did individual tutoring for a second grade class at Westarea Elementary School, and social work students provided clothing assistance to at-risk students at another elementary school. Three of our international students secured $10,000 grants from Davis Projects for Peace and made a difference in their home countries by establishing a Women’s Vocational Center in India, by creating the Youth Leadership for Peace and establishing a summer camp in Afghanistan, and by drilling two 120-foot wells for a village in Ethiopia. This publication recognizes and honors those who made gifts to Methodist University in 2007. Many of the good things listed above would not have been possible without your help. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students. Sincerely, M. Elton Hendricks Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Methodist University is truly blessed with a talented and committed faculty and staff and friends like you who believe that education can change our world. We are well aware that unto whom much is given, much shall be required and know that our work has just begun. In 2008, we will continue the renovation of our residence halls, break ground on a new Art Building, focus on the expansion of our Physician Assistant Program, and develop a new program that will help combat the methamphetamine problem in our state. Methodist University Board of Trustees Message from the Chair July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008 Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to report that Methodist University is continuing to demonstrate strength and growth. To bring you up to date, I would like to mention some of the trends that bode well for our future. Our student population is now over 2,100 students with approximately 900 of them living on campus. Our students, while mostly from NC, are from 45 states and 40 countries including 10 from Russia. The freshman class SAT & GPA averages over the last three years have been the highest they have ever been. Campus facilities and grounds are improving every year and we are preparing to begin construction of a new Fine Arts Building made possible by a substantial gift from Mr. William F. Bethune, a friend of Methodist University. Alfred E. Cleveland, Chair Earl D. Leake ’73 Harvey T. Wright, II ’70, Vice-Chair Rev. David O. Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Approximately two years ago, the Board of Trustees adopted the mandate of pursuing a “Culture of Excellence.” Students, faculty, and the administration are constantly reminded of this goal as the University strives to accomplish its mission of trying to help every student reach their full potential in their intellectual, athletic, and spiritual journey while at Methodist. Mary Lynn Bryan Vice President, Human Resources and Organizational Development, Lance, Inc. Highlights 2007 Artwork Methodist University was the proud recipient of three new pieces of artwork in 2007. Located in front of Reeves Auditorium is “Elevated Visions,” a stainless steel abstract commissioned by Dr. Gerald and Mrs. Naoma Ellison. The piece, sculpted by N.C. artist Michael Baker, weighs approximately 350 pounds and is over 10 feet tall and five feet wide. Local artist David McCune designed and constructed two pieces of artwork for the new Science Building. Closest to the D. Keith Allison Math & Computer Science Building is the Greek letter π, used to identify an important ratio in mathematics. The second sculpture, closest to the Science Building, represents the double helix model for the structure of DNA. Athletics On May 11, 2007, the Methodist University Women’s Golf team claimed their 10th consecutive Division III National Championship. The team won by 88 strokes with junior Katie Dick earning individual honors. All five team members were named All-Americans by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). Methodist University 2007 Annual Report An online community, Monarch Connections, was established for Methodist University alumni to communicate and support one another in a secure online environment. Academics Katie Zybeck, systems/reference librarian, received a grant for $20,822 from the State Library of North Carolina to purchase 14 laptops and additional equipment for the library. The USA South Athletic Conference honored 57 Methodist student-athletes with All-Conference honors during 2007. With every sport represented, the Monarchs were named First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention selections, with four student-athletes going on to receive Player of the Year recognition, and three being named Rookie of the Year. Three new endowed professorships were added in 2007 in the areas of English, History, and International Business. Working with hydrologist Thomas S. Blue, of Southern Pines, N.C., Methodist University implemented a bioretention system to employ the current best management practices for storm water runoff. Twelve bioretention areas were developed which are designed to absorb normal rainfall back into the ground after no more than 48 hours. Half were covered with sod, with the other half containing over 760 plants of 50 species native to the state. The areas will be evaluated for their tolerance to both wet and dry conditions as well as the amount of maintenance required, providing Methodist’s biology department an opportunity to research which plant species and soil compositions are best suited for these applications in the Cape Fear region. In July 2007, the Renovating the Classics campaign kicked off with a goal of raising $2.2 million to renovate Cumberland, Garber, Sanford, and Weaver residence halls. These residence halls, completed in 1963 and 1964, have been home to thousands of Methodist University students since that time. The campaign offers the opportunity for alumni to “adopt” their old room with a gift of $1,000. Those giving smaller gifts can still designate their gifts to one of the four dormitories. A special website (www.methodist.edu/classics/index. php) was established to track the progress of the campaign, which lists the names of donors and their hall designations. The website also provides the opportunity to submit and view memorable stories of residence hall and campus life. Methodist University purchased a 51% controlling interest in King’s Grant Golf Course to provide additional laboratory and practice facilities for the more than 300 students enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Program. Methodist students now have access to two 18-hole golf courses. Dr. Sharon Kendrick, Director of Resort and Club Management received a Best Paper Award at the IBAM conference in Reno, NV. The University’s new Southeastern Center for Environmental Excellence with its fully interactive 3-D simulation room opened in 2007. The Center will provide computer animated virtual environment simulations, in-depth examinations of case studies and experiential learning for students. It will also serve as a training site for employees of industry and government to increase awareness in occupational and environmental management and decrease preventable incidents. Campaign Update The newly completed 23,551 square foot Nimocks Fitness Center and 27,301 square foot Science addition were dedicated Fall 2007. These buildings were the result of the successful Seeds on Good Soil, A New Season campaign which raised over $14.7 million. The Science building houses eleven state-of-the-art biology and chemistry labs and the University’s Simulation Center. This campaign is not only of interest to alumni and parents, but to those who visit the campus every year for United Methodist ACS youth conference, or the Annual Conference of the N.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church, which was held on the campus for twenty years until it outgrew the facilities in the early 2000’s. Dr. Willis Watt received the Editor’s Choice Award for outstanding achievement on two of his poems, Attitude of Gratitude and Do it again!, both of which were published in 2007. The academic program was expanded with the addition of a new Graphic Design Program. Garber $8,880 Cumberland $21,575 Sanford $11,125 Weaver $8,645 In 2007, Methodist celebrated the inaugural graduating classes of 10 from The Professional Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Pinehurst® and 13 from the Master of Justice Administration (MJA) Program. In the summer of 2007 three MU international students implemented projects as a result of receiving $10,000 each from the Davis Projects for Peace. Sana Sabri established a Women’s Vocational Center in Saharanpur, India, to teach underprivileged and under-skilled women trades such as hairdressing, tailoring, machine embroidering, and classes typically part of elementary education in the US. Rahila Muhibi implemented the first summer youth camp for 40 children in Afghanistan with the mission of teaching the children how to respect cultural and ethnic differences among people in Afghanistan. Husein Nasiro-Sigo drilled two 120-foot deep wells in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. The villagers who often had to travel more than 30 miles by foot for water before the wells were dug, now have local access to clean drinking water. Fouad Fakhouri, MU Orchestra Professor conducted the Amman Symphony Orchestra in Jordan at the invitation of Jordan’s Queen Noor. His newest piece “Heron” premiered during the ’07-’08 season by the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. To date, new heat and air units have been replaced in Cumberland Hall, with plans to complete Sanford and Garber Halls in summer of 2008 and Weaver Hall in summer of 2009. Bathroom renovations have been completed in Cumberland and Sanford Halls, and some work has been done in all four lobbies. Undesignated $281,820 International United Methodist $10,738 Friends $11,325 Foundations $41,475 Parents $9,110 Faculty/Staff $5,205 Alumni/ Former Students $69,842 Trustees $184,350 The primary work of the campaign will be the replacement of the heating and air conditioning units and bathroom renovations in the four residence halls. Over the years, these 40 year old units have lost their efficiency, and cannot effectively battle the humidity of NC summers. Lobbies and common areas of the residence halls will also receive a face lift. As of the date of this publication, $332,045 has been raised toward the $2.2 million goal. A total of 416 alumni from every graduation class through 2006 have contributed and 91 families of current students have made gifts to the campaign. Fifty-three individuals have given gifts of $1,000 or more to adopt a room. Alumni Decade Total Amount Raised Top Class in Decade Amount Raised 1960s $21,151 Class of 1968 $6,355 1970s $24,042 Class of 1970 $5,125 1980s $8,985 Class of 1986 $2,170 1990s $11,775 Class of 1999 $4,100 2000s $3,790 Class of 2004 $1,355 To learn more about the campaign, contact the Development Office at (910) 630-7200, toll free at 1 (800) 488-7110. The momentum that Methodist University has achieved in recent years has been made possible by gifts from people like you. Private funding and income from investments makes up over 20 percent of the University’s budget, which is vital to our success each year. As one of North Carolina’s 36 private, independent colleges, Methodist University currently receives no more than ten percent of its funding from the state, making your private gifts and donations crucial to our mission of providing an education firmly grounded in the liberal arts tradition, nurturing moral values and ethical decision making, and preparing students for a variety of careers. Gifts to Methodist may be unrestricted (available for use where they are needed most) or restricted (designated to specific purposes you identify). Regardless of which you choose, there are many ways in which you can participate, including supporting a campaign priority, scholarships, the Annual Fund, or by making a planned gift. There are as many ways to give to Methodist University as there are fields of study offered, but what they all have in common is that they make a difference for our students and their future. While cash and pledges are the most popular, the following gift options are also available, and many offer considerable tax benefits. For more information, call the Development Office at (910) 630-7200, or toll free at (800) 488-7110, ext. 7200. Your gift will change a life. • Appreciated stocks and securities • Personal property • Real estate • Life insurance • Planned gifts • Matching gifts • Retirement plan funds 16 On December 31, 2007, Virginia Kern, a 1964 graduate of Methodist, gifted 200 shares of Genentech stock to establish the Kern Memorial Endowed Scholarship. An elementary education major, Virginia stated “I am deeply grateful to Methodist College for giving me such a superior education enabling me to enjoy a 25 year career in education and many years as a reading specialist and consultant.” As the stock was transferred to Methodist before it was sold, Ms. Kern avoided capital gains tax as well as receiving a charitable contribution deduction. Gift of Real Estate In December 2007, Mr. William Bethune gave a gift of 115 acres of land to Methodist. Proceeds from the sale of the property will be the primary funding for a new Center for Visual Arts on the campus. The new Art Center will bring studios, classrooms, faculty offices, and exhibit space under one roof on the north side of campus. It will also house Methodist’s new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. Gift of Bequest The Flora Cornelia Bullock and Dr. Samuel B. Wilkins, Jr. Scholarship, established more than thirty years ago at the death of Dr. Wilkins, was the recipient of a generous bequest from the estate of Mrs. Neill Wilkins, who passed away June 6, 2007. Dr. and Mrs. Wilkins were longtime friends and supporters of Methodist. Mrs. Wilkins, a retired teacher from the Fayetteville City Schools, faithfully attended the Endowed Scholarship Luncheon where she enjoyed meeting their scholarship recipients. By naming Methodist in her will, Mrs. Wilkins was able to increase the impact of the Wilkins scholarship on current and future students of Methodist University. Other Gifts for Endowment In January 2007, Mr. G. Gordon Dixon, a 1966 graduate of Methodist and long-time Registrar of the College, established the G. Gordon Dixon ’66 Endowed Education Scholarship to recognize the student enrolled in the Teacher Education program with the highest cumulative grade point average. Mr. Dixon invested 38 years teaching in area public schools, and his scholarship is in memory of his parents, Jasper and Jacqueline Dixon, who were both educators, and in honor of Margaret Hyde Dixon ’81 and Beverly Dixon Cleverley ’79, who are also veteran educators now in their 27th and 29th years of teaching, respectively. Mr. Dixon’s scholarship will encourage all students in the teacher education program to aim for academic excellence. Methodist University was the recipient of two major gifts from The Thomas R. and Elizabeth E. McLean Foundation in 2007, both of which focused on lifting up exceptional faculty. A generous gift in August 2007 established the Thomas R. McLean Endowed Professorship for an outstanding faculty member in the History Department. Later in the year, the Foundation established the Alfred E. Cleveland Award for Excellence in Teaching which will be awarded annually to a faculty member who has shown a commitment to excellence in the knowledge of their discipline, method of instruction, attitude, and interaction with students, both in and out of the classroom. This is the University’s highest teaching award. Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Gift of Stock Dr. Robert S. Christian, professor and chair of the Department of English, and his wife, Kathryn, have been a part of the heart of Methodist since 1968. They have touched the lives of countless students, Dr. Christian through his passion for literature, and Kathryn, first in her role as a nurse and later as library assistant. Anticipating Dr. Christian’s retirement in 2008, they began turning a long-time dream into reality. Dr. Christian made a substantial gift from his Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to establish the Robert S. and Kathryn F. Christian Scholarship for students majoring in English or Writing. In Dr. Christian’s words, “Our work at Methodist University has been a labor of love for both of us, and as we approach retirement, establishing a scholarship seems to be highly appropriate. In this way, we will be able to help Methodist University and its students, whom we dearly love, forever.” 17 Message from the Alumni President Board of Directors Dear Fellow Alumni: As President of the Methodist University Alumni Association, I have had the pleasure of welcoming new graduates to the Association during spring and winter commencement ceremonies for the past several years. What a thrill it was to welcome a record 345 new alumni to the Methodist University Alumni Association in 2007. Methodist alumni now number 9,465, with MUAA members in every state of the United States and in many countries around the world. This year Methodist alumni entered a new era of social networking with the implementation of Monarch Connections, the new on-line alumni directory. Monarch Connections has enabled many alumni to look up old friends they haven’t seen in years and to reconnect to the University as mentors to students or by getting in touch with a former professor. You can log into the password-protected directory at www.methodist.edu/Alum_dev/alumni. htm. I urge you to try it! 20 While financial support is extremely important to the life of Methodist University, it is not the only way to give. Your time and talent can be the best gifts you can share with the University, and participation in events like Homecoming on November 1, 2008 really matters. Contact Career Services about employment or internship opportunities you have available for students. Your Alumni Association Board of Directors invites your involvement and your Alumni Affairs Office always wants to hear from you! It has been an honor for me to serve as President of our Alumni Association for the past four years. Thank you for the opportunity and for the many wonderful experiences! I look forward to continued growth and progress for the University and for the Methodist University Alumni Association! Respectfully, Nona D. The percentage of alumni participation is especially important, as it impacts college rankings and grants. Each year, alumni strengthen their alma mater by using their Greatest Gift Scholarship to help recruit deserving students. Every alum can award one new scholarship per year to a full-time day student that he or she actively recruits for undergraduate admission. Scholarships range from $125 to $1,000 annually. In 2007, a record 145 new Greatest Gift Scholarships were awarded to incoming students. Returning students with Greatest Gifts brought the total to 329. As a result, $193,747 was awarded in scholarship aid – all because alumni told prospective students about Methodist and were willing to fill out a one-page form! Thank you for helping with our recruiting efforts! To learn more about the Greatest Gift Scholarship, contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs at (910) 630-7200, or log on to www.methodist.edu/Alum_dev/alumni_ggs.htm. Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Methodist University 2007 Annual Report Thanks to alumni support and involvement in our alma mater, we can say that we have truly contributed to the success of the University. Hundreds of Methodist alumni have used their Greatest Gift Scholarship to recruit talented students to attend and share in all that our alma mater has to offer. Others have served on campus boards; assisted coaches, professors, and students; or participated in events like Monarch Movers to help new students move into the dorms. Methodist alumni have responded to requests for support for capital and annual fund campaigns, and in the last year, three alumni have endowed scholarships.
