BULLETIN OF NEWSLETTER Febru8ry,1963 New Academic c.A1nnouncinfJ Dean Appointed Dr. Millard P. Burt has been appointed Academic Dean at Methodist College. He will assume his duties on September 1, 1963, and will succeed Dr. Clarence E. Ficken, retired dean of the college, and Sam R. Edwards, who is currently serving as acting dean. Dr. Burt is currently the Dean of Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, N. C., having served in this capacity since August 1, 1958. From 1953 to 1955 he was chairman of the Department of Education and Psychology and Band Director at Atlantic Christian College. Commenting on this new appointment President Weaver said, "We welcome Dr. Burt and his family to Methodist College. Coming as he does from the Deanship of a church-related college of liberal arts, he has an ideal backgrol'.nd of training and experience to give us the sort of leadership and guidance we need in continuing to develop Methodist College as an institution of academic excellence, Christian in concept. He is old enough to have the wisdom which experience and maturity bring and young enough to have progressive ideas and be alive to the challenge and opportunity which a new institution offers. We look forward to his coming with high anticipation." Burt AND education and later served on the faculty of the Raleigh public schools from 1938 to 1940 and from 1946 to 1953. He is a graduate of Atlantic Christian College and holds the M. A. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of North Carolina. He also ste.died at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. A veteran of World War II, Dr. Burt served with the 30th Infantry Division in the European theatre of operations. Each student in the class will work with one child throughout the course. The \course will be taught by Dr. V. G. McBride who, before coming to Methodist College last fall, received nation-wide recognition for his work in establishing and directing a Reading Development Program at Upper Iowa University. RECEIVES I GRANT A grant of $450.00 has been awarded to Methodist College by the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. The grant made to Methodist College was one of 70 selected from among 294 applications from 35 states. Methodist College was the only college from North Carolina to be awarded one of the grants. The Grants Program this year was made possible by the following companies and corporation foundations: Kennecott Copper Corporation, McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, National Biscuit Company, Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation, Pitney-Bowes, Inc., Time, Inc., the United States Steel Foundation, Inc., and The H. W. Wilson Foundation, Inc. The grant will be used to purchase for the Methodist College library approximately 100 volumes in the field of drama. Mrs. Miriam L. Usrey, adviser to the college's Dramatics Club, and Alva W. Stewart, librarian, have expressed appreciation for this grant which will meet the minimum needs for the course in Classical Drama and Play Production and also for the work of the Dramatics Club. The ACRL Grants Program was initiated in 1955 with a 'grant of $30,000 from the U. S. Steel Foundation. The program, directed to the general needs of all colleges and universities, is designed for improving the quality of library service to higher education through fundamental research in librarianship and otherwise aiding in the best use of the most modern teaching and learning materials. February, Dr. James E Hillman Appointed Curriculum Consultant Dr. James E. Hillman, right, of Raleigh, recently accepted a part-time position with Methodist College as consultant on curriculum, with particular emphasis on teacher education and general accreditation. This is another step in the development of a sour.,d and high quality academic program at the college. Dr. Hillman has served for many years in the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction as director of professional services, assistant director of the Board of Higher Education and more. recently advisor in teacher education.
