Cooperating and collaborating with others are ways we can show responsibility. Accepting others: Although we are all different, we can accept one another and celebrate our differences. Leadership skills: Students discussed what it takes to be a classroom leader. Risk-taking: It is important to take risks with our learning and friendships. Setting goals: There are differences between personal, academic, and career goals. Working to accomplish goals is an important part of seeking success! Grade 2: • Individual strengths: We all have our own unique strengths. We considered our personal strengths as well as those of our classmates. • Kind words vs. mean words: The words we use can make others feel a particular way inside. Compliments: We can be kind to one another through praise and the use of “compliment cards.” Grade 1: • Listening: The four ways we listen at school are Stop, Look with our eyes, Hear with our ears, Think with our brain. • Feelings: identify and demonstrate four feelings: happy, sad, mad, scared. We looked at ways to recognize the feeling that we have and that others have and how do we help ourselves and others feel better. • Acceptance and Celebration of others: Finding and focusing on our strengths and the strengths of others. We focused on ways that we are all different and how unique that makes us. Kindergarten • Listening: It is important for us to listen to others, both at school and at home. • Feelings: Our four main feelings are happy, sad, mad, and scared. We have all felt these emotions at some point. • Problem solving: There are many ways to help solve problems, including sharing, taking turns, compromising, apologizing, and getting help. We can use these strategies at recess and free play times. These conversations are part of our work in educating the hearts of our children as well as their minds—and it is what helps make up the “Dublin Difference!” Thank you for your support, Kara Elfers Scottish Corners Elementary School Counselor
