Dear Students,
The 2013-2014 Course and Career Planning Handbook is your guide to getting the most out of your
high school academic career and preparing you for the worlds of college and work.
This document outlines the more than 160 courses available to you. In order to make informed
decisions on what courses are best for you, please consult with our guidance counselors and your
teachers. Each Dublin City Schools staff member is qualified to assist you with course selection.
Take advantage of their expertise to find the best possible classes for you to enhance your high
school experience.
Those looking for challenging and rigorous coursework should consider enrolling in Advanced
Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. These exciting classes are becoming more
important to the college admissions process with each passing year. These types of courses will not
only assist you in the application process, but will prepare you for college-level classes and possibly
help you to earn college credit while still in high school.

Each student is personally responsible for periodically evaluating his/her past, present, and future program of studies to ensure all minimum standards are met prior to
graduation. Additionally, athletes are required to monitor their academic program and progress to ensure eligibility.
Any student in Grade 12 who has not passed one or more of the state-mandated tests must schedule an OGT intervention opportunity. Upper classmen are strongly encouraged to schedule
this intervention.
Students not graduating with their class have until the day before the first day of the following school year to complete those graduation requirements.
*Physical Education Waiver Information:
Students who have participated in District-sponsored interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading for at least two (2) full seasons while enrolled in grades 9 through 11 may be
excused from one-quarter unit (.25 credit) of the high school physical education requirements. Ohio Revised Code defines District-sponsored interscholastic athletics, marching band, or
cheerleading as any high school athletic team, high school cheerleading squad, or high school marching band of the Dublin City Schools that participates in the District’s regular athletic
season(s) and is operated under the supervision of a Board employee. Club activities and/or club sports are not considered part of District-sponsored athletics, marching band, or
cheerleading.
A high school student who has not fulfilled his/her physical education requirement prior to the beginning of his/her senior year will be scheduled into physical education classes. Participation
in District-sponsored interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading during the senior year cannot be used to fulfill the physical education graduation requirement.
Participation in District-sponsored and interscholastic athletics, marching band, or cheerleading seasons prior to the 2012-2013 school year cannot be used to fulfill the physical education
requirement.
Students electing such an option shall complete one-quarter (.25 credit) unit or more in another course of study which is designated by the Board as meeting the high school curriculum
requirements. Such instruction shall be separate from and in addition to all other courses of study and hours of instruction that they are required in order to graduate.
The Physical Education waiver application can be obtained from the athletic department or the guidance office.

Dublin City Schools Schedule Change Request Form 2013-2014
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: From the time a student returns the course request form (February) until the end of the school year (June), a student may
request a schedule change. In these cases, this form is NOT needed. It is important to realize that our master schedule is based upon the student requests made in
February. In order to be fiscally responsible, the number of class sections within each subject area is based on these projections. These requests also dictate new
teacher hires during the summer. Once classes are scheduled, it is difficult to make a schedule change because many classes will be at or near capacity. Students
may not be enrolled in a class that is considered filled. Once a student has received his/her schedule in August, through the remainder of the school year,

Once a student, teacher and parent recognize that the level of difficulty is such that the student is not successful, a

ACADEMIC DISTINCTIONS
Valedictorian
All students who achieve a grade point average of 4.1 and above after the 7th semester will receive the distinction of valedictorian status at
commencement.
Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude, Cum Laude
Students will be honored at commencement based on the following cumulative GPA scale:

International Baccalaureate Diploma
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) awards students the IB Diploma upon successful completion of the six subjects studied and their
culminating assessments and successful completion of the IB core (including Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Action Service, and Extended Essay).
EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS
The Dublin Board of Education recognizes the need to provide alternate means by which students achieve goals of the district through various
educational options. Such options may include, but not be limited to, Credit Flexibility, distance learning, independent study, educational travel,
mentorship programs, summer school, and early college entrance.
Auditing Elective Classes
To audit a class a student needs to seek permission from her/his parent and the teacher of the class and submit it to the high school principal. The
principal will make the final decision for placement. The student must complete all assignments and take course exams and quizzes but will
receive no grades and no credits. A student may elect to audit one course per year. An "X" on the student's transcript and grade card would denote
that the class was audited. Students may petition to audit a class prior to the fifth day of the class.
Early Graduation
The Dublin City Schools has a policy for students wishing to graduate early from high school. Students considering early graduation
should discuss this option with their school counselor and must petition to graduate early prior to the 5th day of class for the early
graduation year.
Grade Replacement
Students are permitted to retake any Dublin course as replacement credit to increase their knowledge base and grade; however, students cannot
earn credit twice for the same course unless otherwise noted in the course description. Both grades that a student earns in a replaced course
remain on the transcript. The lower grade is not calculated in the student’s GPA. Credit is removed from the lower grade. Credit Flexibility may not
be used for credit recovery; however, it may be considered if there is an extenuating circumstance and administrative approval is given. Students
should complete the grade replacement form available in the guidance office.
Credit Recovery
If a student has completed a course and not passed the course, the student may recover the credit through summer school credit recovery or by
repeating the course during the school year. Credit Flexibility may not be used for credit recovery; however, it may be considered if there is an
extenuating circumstance and administrative approval is given.

Options Overview and Timeline

As a result of Senate Bill 311, Credit Flexibility is an opportunity for students to create unique learning
experiences. Credit Flexibility allows students to demonstrate their understanding and skills according to their
individual learning styles and experiences. All high school students have the opportunity to submit an
application for Credit Flexibility.
The two Credit Flexibility options are:
• Credit by Subject Area Competency through Assessments (Test Out)
• Credit by Educational Option
The requirements of Credit by Subject Area Competency through Assessment vary from course to course. Most
courses will require at least two components to earn credit.
Credit Flexibility by Educational Option consists of a student developing his/her own proposal describing in
great detail how they will demonstrate proficiency of the academic content standards/grade level indicators of
the identified course.

Students will receive notification of the approval or denial of their Credit Flexibility application within five
working days of the deadline. Students may resubmit a revised denied application within five working days
upon which the application was returned to the student. Resubmitted applications will receive notification
within 5 working days of resubmission. All students should schedule courses, as usual, until notification has
been received.
8th grade students who wish to participate in either Credit Flexibility option may only do so upon transition to 9th
grade, which officially occurs August 1. Or, if an 8th grade student is already enrolled in a high school level
course in middle school, and wishes to participate in Credit Flexibility, in the content area of the high school
level course being taken, he or she should follow the high school Credit Flexibility deadlines listed above.

OHIO GRADUATION TEST
This test, given in Grade 10 in the areas of writing, reading,
mathematics, science, and social studies, will be aligned to
the academic content standards in each area. Graduation
from an accredited high school in Ohio will depend on
successful completion of all parts of the OGT.
OHIO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC
ASSOCIATION ELIGIBILITY
GRADES 9-12: To be eligible, a student must be currently
enrolled in school and must have received passing grades
in a minimum of five, one-credit courses or the
equivalent and maintain a 2.0 grade point average in the
immediately preceding grading period.
For eligibility purposes, summer school grades may not
be used to substitute for failing grades received the final
grading period of the regular school year or for lack of
enough subjects taken the preceding grading period.
Knowing and following all OHSAA standards will enable
students to protect their athletic eligibility. It is also
important for students to know that they must meet all the
standards in order to be eligible. For additional information

NCAA COLLEGE FRESHMAN ELIGIBILITY
REQUIREMENTS
If students are planning to enroll in college and wish to
participate in Division I or Division II sports, they must
be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Center. There
are several steps in this process. Students should
initiate the process early in their senior year. For more
detailed information and the application materials,
contact the Guidance Department or refer to:

TRANSFER OF CREDIT
Transcripts of students entering a Dublin high school
will be reviewed by the school's guidance staff.
Students from international schools will be awarded a
grade of "S" or "U" for all courses appearing on the
transcript and units based on the hours of class
instruction completed. “S” or “U” grades do not
calculate in the student’s GPA.
If a student transfers into a Dublin high school with a
weighted grade that Dublin does not offer or does not
offer as a weighted grade, the weight will not be
calculated in the student’s Dublin G.P.A.
Do not change a course schedule or drop a course without
first consulting with a school counselor or athletic
administrator to determine whether it will affect eligibility.
Eligibility for each grading period is determined by grades
received the preceding grading period. Semester and
yearly grades have no effect on eligibility. To be
eligible as a ninth grader, a student must be currently
enrolled in school and must have received passing
grades in 75% of subjects in the immediately preceding
grading period.

attendance whether he/she participates or does not

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is an internationally recognized
course of study, which enables students to take a series of classes that emphasize
internationalism, research skills, critical thinking, global awareness, the application of
knowledge, and interdisciplinary learning. The IB Diploma Programme underscores the
importance of developing a well-rounded student.
Students in the IB Diploma Programme take IB courses in six main subject groups including:
Group 1: Language A1

Group 2: Second Language
Group 3: Individuals and
Societies (Social Studies)
Group 4: Experimental
Sciences
Group 5: Mathematics and
Computer Science
Group 6: The Arts or Electives
Note: Students can choose to take a specific IB course of interest within the main subject groups.
IB Diploma students also complete learning components, which are unique to the IB Diploma
Programme. These components include: a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK), an Extended
Essay (EE) on a topic of interest and a component called Creativity, Action, and Service
(CAS).
The Diploma Programme is offered during the last two years of high school (11th and 12th
grades) and serves as a bridge to prepare students as they leave high school and enter higher
education. There are scheduling recommendations for 9th and 10th grade students, who are
interested in participating in the IB Diploma Programme or IB courses.
Students may also choose to enroll in IB courses to earn IB certificates without participating in
the Diploma Programme.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of participating in the IB Diploma Programme?
The primary purpose of the IB Programme is to provide students with an internationally recognized and wellrounded education that will prepare them for college and beyond. Through participation in the IB Diploma
Programme, students learn to become thoughtful citizens, who are able to articulate their thoughts, and manage
their time and responsibilities well. The IB Diploma Programme is also a well-respected programme by colleges
and universities around the world.
What are higher level and standard level IB courses?
There are two levels of IB courses – higher level (HL) and standard level (SL). To earn an IB Diploma, students
are required to take at least three courses (not more than four courses) at the higher level and the remainder of
the courses at the standard level.
The higher-level courses have a required number of class hours, which corresponds to two school years in
length. Higher-level courses have a prescribed curriculum, which includes learning information at an in-depth
level. The standard level courses are required to be at least one school year in length, but many extend across
two years. While students in standard level courses learn information at an in-depth level, the prescribed
curriculum tends to cover less material than the higher level courses.
Can a student take IB courses without participating in the Diploma Programme?
While the full Diploma Programme is the foundation of the International Baccalaureate Programme, the
International Baccalaureate Organization allows students to take individual IB courses without participating in
the full Diploma Programme. Individual IB courses are known as certificate courses because students are able to
earn a certificate in these courses.
Do students receive an IB score awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization for their IB
courses?
Students have prescribed IB assessments for each IB course and earn a score from the International
Baccalaureate Organization based on their performance on these required IB assessments. Students earn a score
from 1 – 7 in each IB course. To be awarded an International Baccalaureate Diploma students must earn a
minimum cumulative score in their courses, and must have required scores in accordance with the scoring rules
set by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Diploma and Certificate
• Students are REQUIRED to complete all of the prescribed IB assessments for the IB courses that they are
taking. There is an IB subject fee that is associated with the multiple IB assessments for each IB course.
This fee includes having a trained IB Assessor evaluate the prescribed IB assessments. . IB fees are due
in the fall of the testing year. For example, if students take a one-year IB SL course, then they would pay
this fee in the fall of their junior year. If they take two-year IB SL or HL courses, they would pay these
fees fall of their senior year. The completion of the prescribed IB assessments is a requirement for all IB
courses.

• Completing Physical Education and Health in the freshman and sophomore year will allow for greater
flexibility in scheduling.

Unique Components of the IB Diploma Programme
Theory of Knowledge – 501 – Year 1/502 – Year 2
In contrast to other courses, which strive to teach students knowledge, this course focuses on the student as a knower, and asks him or
her to step outside his or her perspective to consider knowledge issues. Students will analyze the different ways they can know things,
such as through senses, language, reason and emotion. Empowered with an understanding of their point of view, students will learn to
integrate different disciplines, comparing how scientists, linguists, ethicists and mathematicians approach knowledge. Through a
variety of exercises, including Socratic discussion, journal entries, essays and oral presentations, students will demonstrate their
critical thinking skills by examining the relationships of particular types of knowledge to other parts. Students will break out of their
“comfort zones,” and will learn to think about the “lens” through which they view intellectual problems, helping them have a richer
understanding of the unity and diversity of knowledge. This is a blended course; the Theory or Knowledge curriculum is taught
through Theory of Knowledge seminar days, “Lunch bunch” discussion groups and there is an interactive, online component.

Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) – 545- Year 1/546 – Year 2
CAS takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a counterbalance to the academic selfabsorption some students may feel within a demanding school curriculum. Participation in CAS encourages students to share their
energies and special talents while developing awareness, concern and the ability to work cooperatively with others. The IBO’s goal of
educating the whole person and fostering more caring and socially responsible attitudes comes alive in an immediate way when
students reach beyond themselves and their books. A good CAS project should extend students, and it should help to cultivate a spirit
of open-mindedness, lifelong learning, discovery and self-reliance. It should also develop new skills on many levels, and inspire a
sense of responsibility toward all members of the community.

Extended Essay
The extended essay encompasses independent, self-directed research culminating in a 4,000-word paper intended to prepare students
for work at the college or university level. Students have the opportunity to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest chosen
from any of the IB subjects with the support, advice, and guidance of an IB teacher supervisor. All students in the Diploma
Programme are required to complete an extended essay as a part of the Theory of Knowledge class.
Time Frame:
The Extended Essay is completed over the two years of the IB Diploma Programme within the Theory of
Knowledge course.

Higher Level International Baccalaureate Chemistry is an experimental course in which classroom academic studies are combined with acquisition
of investigation and research skills both in and out of the laboratory. As a linking science between the physical and biological fields, chemistry
incorporates numerous overlapping applications. The course consists of an honors level general chemistry core the first year and a freshman level
college chemistry the second year. Included are the enrichment topics: organic chemistry, biochemistry, fuels, and introductory physical chemistry.
Our aims include providing a body of knowledge, methods, and techniques enabling our students to apply the information and skills within a global
context. We assess understanding in several ways by measuring student’s ability to state fact, discuss theory, compare data, and evaluate

integrates Honors English II and AP US History. As in all higher-level

works as they relate to historical/literary content areas. AP American
Studies is designed to help students develop strong analytical skills,
acquire knowledge of critical issues in US History and prepares students

An AP American Studies student will receive one credit in
Language Arts and one credit in US History. Both grades will be
weighted, because of the additional expectations of this course.

Chemistry is a one-year course developed for students who have never
had chemistry. Students will be prepared for further study in chemistry

The Dublin Teacher Academy (DTA) is a one-year, senior only program offered
for college bound students to provide an opportunity to get a head start on the
path to a successful career in education. This course offers students an in-depth
study and involvement in career paths of the teaching professions. Students will
be in internships guided by experienced teachers in the areas of early-childhood,
middle-childhood, high school and special needs classrooms. In addition to
these internships, students will attend two seminar days a week at the DTA site
at Dublin Scioto High School. Transportation is required. Upon successful
completion of a professional educational portfolio, students will receive three
high school credits plus a possible six semester hours of credit plus possible
CTAG credit at any Ohio Public University for Education 101.

The Young Professionals’ Academy is an unique and challenging non-traditional
semester program allowing students to experience two careers first hand before
choosing a major and going on to college. Enrollment is limited to college bound
juniors and seniors and is based upon the student’s GPA, attendance record,
and successful participation in a panel interview. In addition to career discovery,
students study successful leadership styles and technology skills. Leadership
seminar topics include: time and stress management, decision-making,
teamwork, business writing, resume development, interview skills, networking,
social media, portfolio development, and much more; all focusing on preparing
each student for today’s world of work. The YPA Professional Internship course
pairs a student with a mentor or mentors in a professional field allowing the
student to become immersed in the day-to-day operations of the career, gain
exposure to its related lifestyle, learn about the educational requirements, and
begin to network in that career field. Two sixty-hour internships are tailored to
each student’s interests and abilities. Students are released from class Monday
through Thursday periods 6-8 to attend their internship sites and work with their
mentor(s). Interning in the professional work world typically enhances a
student’s self-confidence, requires a high level of organization and commitment,
and hones time management and decision-making skills. Former YPA students
attest to the value of the YPA program to their college selection and acceptance,
and securing future employment.

The Dublin Business Academy (DBA) provides students with an opportunity to
get started on the path to a successful career in business. This unique and
challenging non-traditional program is for students interested in business,
graphic design, or entrepreneurship. DBA students will contribute and study all
aspects of running a real world business. This includes: accounting, sales,
graphic design, social media marketing, managing websites, creating financial
documents, customer service, developing business models, logistics, and much
more. Students will gain 21st century skills during this exciting experiential
learning opportunity. The DBA will be housed at Dublin Jerome High School
where students will operate Celtic Designs, an existing full service screenprinting and design company. Experienced teachers along with community
business members will guide students through the day-to-day operations of this
business. An interview process will occur after registering for the course. The
top 30 candidates will be selected from all 3 of the Dublin High Schools. This
course will be housed at Jerome High School.

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH ACADEMY- 252
The Biomedical Research Academy is a half-day program that is
open to students from all three high schools through an application
process. Students who are participating will travel to Scioto High
School. Students will receive 5.5 credits for the class work listed
below. Students will use a problem-based approach to develop a
strong foundation into the practices of biomedical professionals
including career-based rotations, and culminating with an authentic
biomedical research investigation.

Important concepts covered in the course are communication and
coordination (nervous/sensory, endocrine, muscular systems),
metabolism (digestive, respiratory, excretory, cardiovascular
systems), protection (immune and lymphatic systems), and
reproduction. Three dimensional art will be incorporated through the
sculpturing of a clay human model that includes all of the
aforementioned systems.

The Energy and the Environment Academy explores global population,
economics, politics, and ethics and world views as it pertains to the
atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and the biosphere. It addresses
the implications of energy consumption and production, waste
management, ecosystem destruction, pollution, and the fluctuations in
global climate while using the Jerome Outdoor Experience Center
(JOEC). This course is taught within three periods during one year and
students will have to travel to Jerome High School for the course. This
class will be taught in an integrated fashion allowing students to develop
interdisciplinary approach to problem solving using a problem-based
approach. This class will also allow students to explore the career
opportunities in the fields of urban planning, environmental design,
ecological restoration, energy production as well as other careers in

The AP Environmental Science Course is designed to be the equivalent
of a one-semester, introductory college course in environmental science.
The course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts,

of various telecommunications software, and use of the Internet. The
activity requires students to interact with other students around the
world. As a result of this interaction, students develop persuasive writing
skills. This class lends itself well to those students who prefer to take
responsibility for their own learning and are self-motivated. This course
will be taught in a blended format.

Tolles Career & Technical Center offers tuition-free career & technical programming to Dublin City School students who are interested in
pursuing their education at a two- or four-year university; students interested in pursuing a career immediately after high school; or a
combination of both. As Tolles is considered an extension of Dublin City Schools, students are expected to meet graduation requirements in
order to graduate from their respective Dublin high school. In addition to receiving their high school diploma, students who successfully
complete a Tolles program will receive a Certificate of Completion and Career Passport from the Center.
Tolles offers a full range of college preparatory academics and Spanish. Tolles provides Dublin students with several opportunities to receive
college credit through the PSEO (for qualifying students), dual credit and articulation agreements. Articulation agreements with several central
Ohio two- and four-year colleges reward students with college credit for successful completion of most programs. Many Tolles students
continue their education at the post-secondary level, receiving over $600,000.00 college scholarships last year.
Full-day and half-day options are available to Dublin students. Students may choose to take their academics at a Dublin City High School or
at Tolles. Transportation is provided to and from the Center.
Entrance Requirements
Admission requirements to attend Tolles Career & Technical Center include a minimum of eight (8) high school credits (including six core
course requirements in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies). Students with three years of high school must have ten (10) high school
credits with eight core courses. It is strongly suggested that students complete their Health and Physical Education credits prior to attending
Tolles Career & Technical Center. Additional prerequisites may be required depending on the program.
