Major themes include: empowerment of students as readers, writers and thinkers, cross content integration, new technologies and current best practices in reading and language arts. Course Objectives • • • To provide professional development opportunities for regional educators. To promote a variety of best practice theories, strategies, models and resources to classroom educators. To enhance professional collaboration among regional educators. Topics Candidates will attend two key note events featuring authors Kylene Beers and Robert Probst authors of Response and Analysis, Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice and Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Margaret Peterson Haddix author of over 30 books including Running out of Time, The Girl With 500 Middle Names, the Shadow Children series and the Missing series. Candidates will attend three professional development of their choice and grade level appropriate specific to current best practices in reading and language arts. Course Requirements/Assignments • • • • Provide a list of the three breakout sessions attended. Write a brief description of the nature of the sessions. 25 points. Compose a two/three page reflection paper detailing how you will integrate new techniques, strategies, theories and resources from the conference into your classroom teaching and practice. Paper will be thorough, detailed and provide evidence of theory to classroom implementation. 75 points.
