UW-Stevens Point Upward Bound Program STUDENT ACADEMIC POLICY All students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program are expected to maintain minimum satisfactory academic progress in their high school course work. Therefore, Upward Bound students MUST earn at least a 2.30 for Freshman and Sophomores and 2.60 for Juniors and Seniors Grade Point Average (GPA) in Core Courses (Core Courses: Mathematics, Science, English, Foreign Language) during each grading period throughout the school year in order to remain in good standing with our Program. In the event an Upward Bound student fails to meet the minimum 2.30 or 2.60 GPA requirements in core areas during a 9 week grading period, the following will occur: 9th and 10th Grade Students 1) If after one grading period (equivalent to a 9 week quarter), a student earns less than a 2.30 GPA in core courses, the Coordinator/Academic Advisor will send the student a written warning indicating his/her level of academic performance is not meeting the minimum grade requirements established by Upward Bound. The written warning will specify what assistance (e.g. additional study time, tutoring, etc.) the student needs to seek through his/her high school and/or Upward Bound as well as inform the student that he/she will be placed on probationary status with our Program should grades not improve by the end of the next grading period. 2) A student will be placed on Academic Probation if he/she does not earn at least a 2.30 GPA in core courses after two (2) consecutive grading periods. Once placed on Academic Probation, a student is not eligible to participate in college campus visits, conferences or optional recreational and cultural program events. However, while on probation, the student must continue to attend scheduled school visits, participate in required program activities and demonstrate effort toward improving his/her academic performance. A student on Academic Probation will be notified of his/her status in writing with a copy being sent to the student’s parent/guardian. 3) A student on Academic Probation will return to good standing with the Upward Bound Program if his/her GPA is improved to a 2.30 (or better) during the next grading period AND all other program responsibilities have been fulfilled. A student removed from Academic Probation will be notified in writing (copy sent to parent) when he/she is in good standing with the Upward Bound Program. 4) A student placed on Academic Probation WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE ACTIVE UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM ROSTER if he/she fails to meet the minimum 2.30 GPA requirement after three (3) consecutive grading periods. A student will also be dropped from participation in Upward Bound if he/she has been placed on Academic Probation more than twice within six (6) grading periods. A student who is dropped from Upward Bound is notified of his/her status in writing (copy to parent) with exceptions to the expulsion being made only under extreme personal circumstances which have been approved through the Program Director. A 9th or 10th grade student who is dropped from the Upward Bound Program may apply for re-admission into the Upward Bound Program at the beginning of the following academic year. A student applying for re-admission will be considered a “new student” and must meet minimum eligibility requirements required of all first time applicants. 11th and 12th Grade Students 1) If after two consecutive grading periods (equivalent to two 9 week quarters or 1 semester) a student will be placed on Academic Probation if he/she earns less than a 2.60 GPA in core courses. Once on Academic Probation, the student is not eligible to participate in college campus visits, conferences or optional recreational and cultural program events. However, while on probation, the student must continue to attend scheduled school visits, participate in required program activities and demonstrate effort in improving his/her academic performance. A student placed on Academic Probation will be notified of his/her status in writing with a copy being sent to the student’s parent/guardian. 2) A student on Academic Probation will return to good standing with the Upward Bound Program if his/her GPA has improved to a 2.60 or higher during the next grading period AND all other program responsibilities have been fulfilled. A student removed from Academic Probation will be notified in writing (copy sent to parents) when he/she is in good standing with the Upward Bound Program. 3) A student placed on Academic Probation WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE ACTIVE UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM ROSTER if he/she fails to meet the minimum 2.60 GPA requirement after three (3) consecutive grading periods. An 11th or 12th grade student who is dropped from participation in the Upward Bound Program will be notified of his/her status in writing (copy sent to parents) with exceptions to the expulsion being made only under extreme personal circumstances which have been approved through the Program Director. An 11th or 12th grade student who is dropped from Upward Bound is not eligible for re-admission. 4) A student who is placed on Academic Probation more than twice during his/her Junior or Senior year will be dropped from the Upward Bound Program. ALL STUDENTS A student’s attendance, behavior and program compliance is closely monitored.
