Camp COFAC is an intensive music immersion experience at UW-Stevens Point offered by the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC). The camp is open to students entering grades 9-12, as well as graduating seniors. The camp is directed by Mathew Buchman of the UW-Stevens Point Department of Music. The week culminates in a concert on Saturday, June 25. Immerse Yourself! An Intensive Week of Music Sunday High School Strings June 19-25, 2016 Teaching Artists, Transforming Lives Check-in at your residence hall from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. After a short introductory meeting, you will break into studio groups by “major” with your primary faculty instructor. The emphasis during the first day is for faculty and counselors to get to know you. Come prepared to play, connect, and have fun. During the Week You will work exclusively with UW-Stevens Point music faculty for a minimum of four hours per day in your “major.” Additional activities include large ensembles (band/choir/jazz ensemble/ string orchestra), chamber ensembles, theory/composition sessions, and history/aesthetics seminars. Individual practice time and recreation are also an important part of the daily schedule. Camp counselors are UW-Stevens Point music majors who assist campers throughout the week, and provide an insider’s perspective about the life of a university music student. Faculty and counselors join campers for evening activities including a talent show and recital. Camp COFAC Music • Video Production Saturday Camp COFAC closes with a final concert on Saturday morning. Campers’ families are encouraged to attend. Check-out is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Students will select one “major” for the week: violin, viola, double bass, cello, voice, piano, guitar, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, oboe, flute, saxophone, clarinet, percussion/drumset, or composition. Activities will include daily master classes, warm-up exercises, group lessons, chamber ensembles, supervised practice time, opera and musical theatre scene workshops (vocalists only), and reed fixing class for woodwinds. Strings Campers studying violin, viola, cello and double bass work with and play side-by-side with Professors Bjella, Leviton, Beechey and Story on a variety of technical and musical issues. Bowing, physical setup, chamber music, as well as work on improvisation and less traditional musical styles are covered. In addition to learning new music at camp, students are asked to bring recently performed or in-progress pieces for coaching. Camp COFAC Scholarships A limited number of scholarships are available through the Wisconsin DPI Precollege Scholarship Program and the UW-Stevens Point College of Fine Arts and Communication. No other college in Wisconsin is accredited by all four professional associations. Mathew Buchman (Director) Professor and Director of Jazz Studies. He is currently serving as president of the Wisconsin Association for Jazz Education. He has presented for WMEA, WMTA and serves as clinician/adjudicator for festivals around the upper Midwest. He has directed Camp COFAC Music since 2009. Barbara Beechey (Viola) Dr. Barbara Beechey has taught full-time at the Lawrence University Academy of Music since 1999. Believing strongly that students can successfully start on the viola rather than starting first on the violin, she has developed a strong pre-college studio whose members have been accepted to schools such as Juilliard, Oberlin, and UW-Madison among others. In the past, Dr. Beechey also designed and taught the upper string pedagogy course for the Lawrence Conservatory of Music. Steve Bjella (Violin, Viola) Professor and Coordinator of Strings. He has performed throughout the U.S., appearing both as soloist and in a variety of chamber ensembles. He also enjoys making music with his colleagues in the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and is concertmaster of the orchestra. Lawrence Leviton (Cello) Professor of Cello. He has been active as a clinician and performer throughout the country. He also teaches music in film, cello pedagogy, music appreciation and coaches chamber music. He is a PastPresident of the Wisconsin Cello Society and his affiliations include the American String Teachers Association and the American Suzuki Association. Dr. Leviton’s students have gone on to successful careers as orchestral players and teachers.
