To: All Faculty From: Academic Standards and Curriculum Review Committee Date: November 28, 2011 Re: Prerequisite Revision Requests With the completion of the Prerequisite Enforcement pilot project this fall, the University is proceeding toward implementation of prerequisite enforcement at the time of registration. Those courses whose current catalog descriptions list prerequisites will be the first to have prerequisites enforced in CyberBear, starting with the spring registration for the Autumn 2012 semester. Adding Catalog Language that Defines “Satisfactory Completion” of a Prerequisite ASCRC recommends adding to the “Academics Policies and Procedures” section of the Catalog a new paragraph that defines “satisfactory completion” for prerequisites: "Prereq." indicates the course or courses to be satisfactorily completed (C- or better, unless otherwise specified in the course description in the UM Catalog) before enrollment in the course described. Failure to satisfactorily complete the prerequisite will result in the student being dropped from the course. If credit was earned for a prerequisite through the Advanced Placement Examination Program, the grade "CR*" signifies satisfactory completion unless otherwise specified in the course description in the UM Catalog. Coreq." indicates a course is taken concurrently with the course described. In some cases a coreq may be completed prior to the semester of the described course. Note: Currently the university course registration system is not capable of enforcing corequisites at the time of registration. It will remain the responsibility of departments to check for corequisites enrollment at their option. Submitting a Request to Revise Course Prerequisites Departments seeking to add, delete, or amend the listed prerequisites in a course description may do so by submitting a separate request for each course to ASCRC. The Prerequisite Revision Request form is attached and available on the Faculty Senate website at http://www.umt.edu/facultysenate/committees/ASCRC/curriculumreview/. The language describing the prerequisite must be specific and verifiable. It is not necessary to submit a Prerequisite Revision Request if the only change is due to Common Course Numbering conversions. In order for revised course description to appear in the 2012-2013 Course Catalog, please submit the original and electronic copy to the Faculty Senate Office by 5:00 pm on Friday, January 27th. All requests submitted after the January 27th deadline will not be considered by ASCRC until the fall of 2012.
