Chair Knight called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.
The minutes from 9/28/10 were amended and approved.
Communications:

New student members Joe Sanders, Luke Sims, and Katie Spika were welcomed to
the committee.

The Residency Requirement Catalog Language was approved by the Faculty Senate.

ASCRC’s procedure for adding new courses advises subcommittees to ask whether a
course has been taught experimentally. However, it does not require courses to be
taught experimentally. If this was a requirement it should be noted on the new course
form. Departments may have valid reasons for creating a course that is not first
taught experimentally. ASCRC may want consider revising the procedure language
so it is clear that departments may develop new courses without first teaching them
experimentally. The justification section of the form should address the need for the
course.

The revised reserved course number policy was updated based on common-course
numbering changes, but no longer specifies a number for professional papers. The
revisions likely did not take into account the need for a professional paper reserved
number because they are mostly used for graduate courses. Professional paper will be
added to the policy under X99.
Business Items:

Associate Provost Walker-Andrews summarized the data provided by the Director of
the First Year Interest Group (FIG) program, Steve Edwards. The materials included:
o A list of courses, associated department, and faculty mentor
o Letter to faculty requesting FIG Leader nominations
o FIG Leader application
o FIG Leader interview questions
o Syllabi for FIG Leader Training Seminars taken pre and concurrent to FIG
Seminar (Currently these are set up as experimental courses in the Honors
College. Course forms will be submitted next year for permanent status)
o Distribution of grades in FIG Seminars
o FIG Leader GPA distribution
o Memo- Responsibilities for First-Year Interest Groups Faculty Mentors
o FIG Seminar Student Course Evaluation
o FIG Program Evaluation for FIG Leaders
o Sample syllabi for FIG Seminar courses
Academic Affairs is still working on finding an academic home for the courses to
assure adequate oversight. The Honors College would not be an appropriate academic
home for the FIG Seminars because students would likely think they had to be honors
students in order to take the courses. Associate Provost Walker-Andrews has spoken
with the Dean of the Mansfield Library, but the library faculty have not been
consulted. Associate Provost Walker-Andrews will see about getting on the agenda
for a library faculty meeting.
Possible options for improvements to the program include stipends for faculty
mentors, change grading status to credit / no credit, and assure the faculty of record is
listed on the syllabus. FIG Leaders academic performance while teaching should be
tracked and analyzed as well.
The model may be expanded to incorporate the “big picture” theme of guiding
students’ general education. The program would have to be faculty driven and could
include linked courses that address systematic questions.

Professor Muench, the Humanities and Cultural Studies Subcommittee Chair
presented the consent agenda. The courses appended below were approved.
The issue of cross-listing arose during the review. It was suggested that the course
form be revised so departments are required to identify the primary rubric of the
course. Professor Muench used “z” as the place holder for the cross-listed courses.
Ideally cross-listing should be a local way of labeling the course. Students should be
directed to register for the common-course from the cross-listed label.
Curriculum review is complicated by the concurrent review of the FLOCS. Course
numbers and titles are a moving target, so programs should consider where they are in
the review when proposing changes.
Although ASCRC and the Faculty Senate may approve a course number proposed by
the department, it is not finalized until after it has been reviewed by the FLOC or the
Commissioner’s Office. The following statement is on the course form to alert
departments to this situation: The course number may be changed at the system level.
Good and Welfare

Registrar Johnson acknowledged the Registrar Office Staff, Bonnie Holzworth and
David Devolve for their work on common-course implementation
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 PM.
