For the numbers 1. and 2. state whether the argument is inductive or deductive. If it
is inductive and uses a mathematical rule inductively test each rule and state whether
the argument is strong or not and why. If it is deductive use the Venn Diagram Test
for validity to show that the statement is either valid or invalid then state whether
you think the statement is sound or unsound.
1. Premise: All mammels have hair.
Premise: If an animal has hair then it is warm blooded.
Premise: If an animal runs fast then it is warm blooded.
Conclusion: All mammels run fast.
2. Premise: If two numbers have a remainder of 1 when divided by 4 then their
sum has a remainder of 2 when divided by 4.
Premise: If two numbers have a remainder of 3 when divided by 4 then their
sum has a remainder of 2 when divided by 4
Conclusion: The sum of any two integers when divided by 4 has a remainder of
2.
For problems 3. draw a Venn Diagram to represent the situation, then answer
any questions in the problem itself.
3. Say that a town has a total of 6,956 people. Given the following facts determine
how many unemployed adults that are not retired are in the town. There are
2,534 people that work in the auto plant, there are 1,653 people that work in
the hospital, and 1,432 that work at the university. No one works in all three
jobs, and the number of people who work two jobs is 946. There are 1297 kids
in the town and 985 retired persons in the town. (Assume that these are the
only 3 jobs in the town, no one outside the town is employed in these three
places, and kids do not work.)
4. Dan recently has recieved three credit card oers from Visa, Mastercard, and
American Express. Visa oered an APR of 9.7%, Mastercard oered an APR of
13.65%, and American Express oered an APR of 6.2%. Find the absolute and
relative dierence between each combination of two dierent cards, and then
nd the APR of each card in terms \of" the APR of the other two cards.
5. Say that you have a solid brick of gold on your coee table. The brick is 1 foot
6 inches 1 yard. How much is the brick worth in US dollars, Canadian
dollars, Japanesse yen, British pounds, and euros?
6. Say that a semi-truck is carrying 8454 gallons of gasoline to a gas station. The
truck gets stopped at three weigh stations. The rst station reads the weight of
the gas as being 34,875 kilograms. The second station reads the weight of the gas
as being 81,234 pounds. The third station reads the weight of the gas as being
39.65 tons. Find the absolute and relative error of each stations measurement
using your conversion as the actual value. Which of the measurements is the
most precise and which one is the most accurate?
7. Make an order of magnitude estimation about the distance between Mexico City,
Mexico and Toronto, Canada. Given your estimation answer the following. As
you drive from Mexico City to Toronto the temperature changes from 300K in
Mexico to 3 F in Canada. What was the absolute and relative change in the
temperature on the trip. On average how much does the temperature drop in
degrees F per 1000 kilometers?
