Methodist University Title III Times From the Director Colleagues, Since the release of the April issue of Title III Times, a number of activities have occurred. As you know, Methodist University received funding for a Title III grant last October. Title III funds are to be used to upgrade our technology, both in terms of installing a campus-wide integrated database and installing instructional technology in our academic facilities. Here is a review of activities that have occurred in the last month: First, what has been happening regarding the integrated database: • Module managers are currently undergoing the second round of training (Training Trip 2) from Jenzabar trainers who are visiting campus. • This second round of training is taking place in our new training center which has been installed on the first floor of the Mallet-Rogers House. • The training center is operating very well, and thanks go to the folks in OIC for setting up this facility and to Pam McEvoy for letting the training center impose on this space in the Mallet-Rogers House. • Training Trip 2 has occurred for the Registration, Advising, and Student Life Jenzabar software modules. • Other Training Trip 2 visits occur throughout May for the Business Office, Admissions, and Financial Aid software modules. Please see the Calendar in this issue. • Several more rounds of training from visiting Jenzabar trainers are scheduled well into 2012. • As reported last month, we expect to “Go Live” with the Jenzabar EX system in July, 2012. Go Live for the JICS web portals will be sometime in October, 2012. The following has been happening regarding instructional technology: • E-Instruction, a vendor of classroom response systems (CRS) has made presentations to faculty and students. • Smarter Systems, a vendor for Smart Technologies, has looked at classrooms and provided quotes for multimedia instruction. • Dr. Morgan is continuing to meet with faculty, getting drafts of technology integration plans (TIPs) and survey responses. • Dr. Morgan has formed the Technology Integration Committee. The web site should be up and running early this summer. I attended the Title III Director’s conference in Washington, DC, April 19-21 for workshops on Title III project administration. I also met with institutions from North Carolina and elsewhere to establish networking resources as we go forward with this Title III project. Mary Hupp and Jasmin Brown (the MU Registrar) are attending the Jenzabar annual conference June 1-4 to attend workshops and network with personnel from other EX customer institutions. From the Director 1 Calendar 2 Morgan’s Minutes 3 Teaching Tips 4 FAQs 4 We are very excited about the direction our Title III project is going to take our institution. All members of the MU community, particularly students, will benefit from this major transition. I will keep you posted on developments. I know of at least three professors on campus that are beginning to investigate and incorporate this approach into their teaching practice. The beauty of this approach is that it opens the door for scholarly investigation into one’s teaching practice. (See the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) http://www.ipfw.edu/celt/learning/ PDFs/solt_carnegie.pdf ) Below are a number of websites, vodcasts, and blogs on changing the practice of teaching. The practice is called flipping the classroom. Essentially the professor pre-records the lecture materials into short 10 minute productions known as vodcasts and requires the students to watch them prior to class. Class time then is devoted to practical application of the ‘tools of the trade’ guided by professor. In effect, the professor develops the students learning in the classroom through ‘hands on activities’, guided learning, discussion, ‘inquiry based learning’ and problem solving. The concept is to design a teaching and learning that develops mastery learning. “There are several advantages to this approach. For example, the instructor is available to answer questions while his or her students are working on their exercises, there are more opportunities for students to collaborate, classroom time is freed up for more in-depth activities, and the students have access to their courses' content (the lectures) whenever they need to review it.” Available at: http://www.taistn.org/page.cfm?p=467 “What is a Flipped or Reversed Classroom?” Flipped Classroom - The flipped classroom is a model of teaching in which a student’s homework is the traditional lecture viewed outside of class on a vodcast. Then class time is spent on inquirybased learning which would include what would traditionally be viewed as a student’s homework assignment. Synonymous with Reverse Classroom. Vodcast – A vodcast is a podcast that also incorporates video in addition to audio. They are short screen captures of material with narration by an instructor, typically performed on a Tablet PC or SmartBoard. These digital videos can be observed online or downloaded. Vodcasts can capture solutions to example problems, provide tools and tips on specific concepts, and supplement lecture notes. This is the brainchild of Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams who are pioneers in the field of using vodcasts in the classroom. They have devised a new method of teaching called Pre-Vodcasting and the Flipped Classroom. In this model, students watch vodcasts at home and class time is spent in engaging hands-on activities and directed problem solving. Both Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams are High School Science teachers in Woodland Park Colorado. Thus far, students using the Pre-Vodcasting model have been very successful in mastering chemistry. We believe that all teachers can benefit from Vodcasting their lessons live, and that the Pre-Vodcasting and Flipped Classroom can revolutionize instruction in Math, Science, and Foreign Language. http:// mast.unco.edu/programs/vodcasting/index.php Flipping the classroom Learning, Context, Management & Implementation, Change Management There's a lot of thought flying around the web at the moment about the concept of "flipping the classroom" using the Internet to provide pre-classroom lectures, and the classroom to embed that knowledge through exercises, coaching and discussion. http://www.learningconversations.co.uk/main/index.php/2011/03/19/flipping-the-classroom?blog=5 Flipping the Classroom https://sites.google.com/site/websiteevaluationresources/flipping-the-classroom (continued on page 5) Methodist University 5400 Ramsey St. Fayetteville, NC 28311 (910) 630-7081 FAQ continued Inside this issue: The Flipped Classroom Advances: Developments in Reverse Learning and Instruction From the Director http://21k12blog.net/2011/02/13/the-flipped-classroom-advances-developments-in-reverse Calendar -learning-and-instruction/ YouTube Event About this Talk Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script -- give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.
