Please describe your experience on the committee (What information would you
share with a faculty member who is considering service on this committee?)
New procedures and timeline for reviewing unit standards were adopted this year
allowing the USC to review unit standards in a batch rather than on a rolling basis. A
copy of the new procedures is filed in the Faculty Senate office and will also be included
in the files transferred to next year’s USC chair. Because of an unusually large number
of documents to be reviewed this year, the USC chose to work by subcommittee and
communicate electronically with exception of two organizational face-to-face meetings.
This seemed to work well as feedback from committee members was favorable and the
group was certainly productive. As outgoing chair, I would pass on suggestions for three
changes; 1.) have the departments whose unit standards are under review submit their
draft documents with “Track changes” on so that committee members review only
changes to the document since the last review; 2.) At the first meeting of the year, invite
Mike Kupilic, or someone equally as knowledgeable about the CBA to orient committee
members to the requirements and definitions found in the CBA regarding unit standards;
and, 3.) have an end of the year meeting to debrief in person and discuss improvements to
the process.
