ASCRC Minutes 11/1/11 GBB 226, 2:10 Members Present: M. Beebe-Frankenberger, D. Dalenberg, W. Davies, N. Greymorning, M. Grimes, C. Henderson, C. Knight, J. Staub, L. Tangedahl Members Absent/Excused: B. Borrie, D. Stolle Ex-Officio Present: B. Holzworth, E. Johnson, S. O’Hare, A. Walker-Andrews Chair Tangedahl called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. The minutes from 10/25/11 were approved. Communication Items: ASCRC members were copied on the Provost’s response to the Writing Committees’ Writing Skills Advocacy letter. The Provost is aware of the situation involving Forestry limiting enrollment on its Technical Writing Course to majors only. Health and Human Performance and Computer Science required their majors to take the course. The deans and other groups are discussing the complex matter. There is not a magic pool of funds to address such problems. It was questioned whether ASCRC should add its’ voice. Students need to have access to courses that teach writing appropriate for their major. Over the years there has been concern that one composition course is not sufficient to teach students to write. However, resources have not been allocated for a second composition course. Resources are spent on assessment (UDWPA), but it does not improve students writing. There are no additional resources going towards the writing program assessment pilot project. Hopefully this approach will identify areas where improvements can be made to improve students writing. A member of the Prerequisite Working Group requested ASCRC to consider catalog language defining satisfactory completion of prerequisites. Unless otherwise specified in the course description in the UM Catalog, prerequisite courses for an undergraduate course need to be completed with a traditional letter grade of C- or better. If a prerequisite is satisfied through Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or CLEP exam credit, the grade "CR" is acceptable. ASCRC discussed the issue and incorporated the language into the current catalog language. It is the students’ responsibility to know the consequences of not satisfactorily completing prerequisites. Language will need to be considered for failure to satisfactorily complete corequisites. Prerequisites and Corequisites "Prereq.." indicates the course or courses to be satisfactorily completed (C- or better, unless otherwise specified in the course description in the UM Catalog) before enrollment in the course described. Failure to complete satisfactorily the prerequisite will result in the student being dropped from the course. "Coreq." indicates a course which must be taken concurrently with the course described. Executive Director O’Hare will take the language to the Working Group for consideration. Programs can set higher standards. The committee briefly discussed a possible fast track process for considering prerequisite changes. It is likely the fall pilot will be expanded to include additional courses. These courses will have clear, specific prerequisites. The form should be easy to complete and to review. The draft prerequisite review form will be edited and sent to the Working Group for consideration. It is unclear whether a prerequisite changes review is necessary this spring. Changes must go to the Faculty Senate in February in order to make the on-line catalog. Would a spring review be conducted by the curriculum subcommittees or members of ASCRC? The committee requests a timeline from the Working Group that justifies the compressed review. When is full Prerequisite implementation expected? ASCRC members are invited to the Global Leadership Initiative Retreat on November 10th with Dr Carol Schneider, President of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. There will be various working groups in the morning and a talk and panel discussion with UM faculty members at 2:10 pm. Business Items: Curriculum Review The Science and Math Subcommittee approved the appended list of courses after review of follow-up responses. A few additional courses were recommended for approval from the Humanities Subcommittee (approved list appended). Changes were made to the language in the Arabic Minor proposal, but ASCRC still has concerns. David Aronofsky, UM Legal Council and Lucy France, Director, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action will be contacted for guidance. Course forms require signature of other affected programs. A few additional items were approved from Education and Fine Arts (list appended). MAR 360, 362 and Musics Technology and Resources for K-12 courses were withdrawn. ASCRC did not approve ARTZ 492 UG Independent Study. The program is requesting to change repeatability from 12 to 24. This is a lot of credits to show in one course on a student’s transcript. The consent agenda of the Social and Behavioral Subcommittee was approved (appended below). The subcommittee asked ASCRC whether there should be a policy regarding unatached minors. It seems there should be some guidelines regarding academic oversight and line of authority. The committee will ask the Exective Committee of the Faculty Senate for input.
