ASCRC Minutes 2/7/12
GBB 202, 2:10
Members Present: B. Borrie, D. Dalenberg, W. Davies, N. Greymorning, M. Grimes C. Henderson, C. Knight, L. Tangedahl, C.
Springmeyer, J. Staub, D. Stolle,
Members Absent/Excused: M. Beebe-Frankenberger
Ex-Officio Present: B. Holzworth, E. Johnson, S. O’Hare, A. Walker-Andrews
Chair Tangedahl called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.
The minutes from 1/31/12were approved.
Communication Items:

Student member Clay Springmeyer was welcomed to the committee and members introduced themselves.

Professor Beeb-Frankenberger resigned from the committee.

The College of Technology has drafted an MOU between UM and MLEA to address ECOS’ concerns regarding the Associate of
Arts degree in Police Science. ASCRC noted that the MOU does not clarify the academic oversight/ accountability in the
departmental structure. Professor Henderson will speak with Associate Dean Stocking regarding ASCRC’s discussion and Chair
Tangedahl will send a follow-up correspondence (appended below).

ECOS considered whether one-time-only general education courses require Senate approval. It agreed that the current procedure,
which only requires ASCRC approval, was adequate.

Registrar Johnson reported on the Cross-listing pilot project. John Thunstrom, Assistant Chief Information Officer is working on a
Banner modification that will add a statement to the students’ transcript listing the common course number equivalent of
crosslisted courses. The pilot project will involve approximately 20 courses for fall 2012. No final decision has been made in
terms of the course numbers used for cross-listing.
Business Items:

The prereq review was summarized for each group. There were a few follow-up items, withdraws, and additional forms. A few
edits were made on the consent agenda and it was approved (appended below). The instructions may need to be more specific in
terms of a standard format for the next review. It was clarified that coding will be entered to check math at a highter level. This
will also be necessary with some of the science prerequisites above the minimum.

The revised English Writing Skills Language was approved.
Group I: English Writing Skills
The ability to write effectively is fundamental to success in academic, professional, and civic endeavors. Specifically, a student
should be able to:










Use writing to learn and synthesize new concepts;
Produce focused writing that is developed, logical and organized
Formulate and express written opinions and ideas that are developed, logical, and organized;
Compose written documents that are appropriate for a given audience, purpose, and context;
Revise written documents work based on constructive feedback;
Develop competence in information literacy, information technology and digital literacy;
Find, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically
Begin to use discipline-specific writing style and citation conventions;
Demonstrate appropriate English language usage.
ASCRC briefly discussed the need for a letter to be sent regarding catalog review. It will be revised to include a link to the
translation guide and deadline dates form the production calendar. Registrar Johnson will have the production calendar available
at the next meeting.

The revised course form was reviewed. Several changes were suggested. Camie will bring the revisions to the next meeting.
Information regarding the need for a letter of endorsement from the department if proposed by a non-tenure track faculty member
will be added to the instructions. Review will continue next week.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
Police Science Communication
Lynn and Joe,
ASCRC discussed the MOU for the Police Science program yesterday and Colin Henderson carried our discussion to Lynn right after
the meeting.
Here is my take on our discussion yesterday as well as during our earlier consideration of the proposal. I think something like the
following should either be added to the MOU or articulated elsewhere in the proposal.
The Police Science program resides in the University of Montana-Missoula College of Technology Department of Applied Arts and
Sciences [is that right?]. Oversight of this program is the responsibility of the chair of this department and the dean of the COT. The
department chair and dean have reviewed the Police Science Course Proposals, teaching methods, and instructors and have found all
of this to meet the standards for the COT.
MLEA agrees to notify the department chair in the event of any change in course content, teaching methods, or instructors and this
change will be reviewed by the department chair and the dean of the COT. Any course or other significant change will be taken to
ASCRC and then to faculty senate for approval, the same as with any other course change. In the event that any change is determined
by the chair, the dean, ASCRC, or faculty senate to not meet the standards for the COT, then UM credit will no longer be given for the
affected course(s).
To take a course taught by MLEA, a student must be accepted by the MLEA and pay the required fees. In addition, to receive UM
credit for a course taught at the MLEA, a student must be accepted by the University of Montana and pay the tuition and fees required
by UM. [If there is a procedure that would allow a UM student to take one or more courses at the MLEA then this procedure should
be articulated.]
.... comments by other ASCRC members?
Please let me know if you have any questions and if you plan to “un-table” the motion at faculty senate on Thursday.
