The Writing Courses (appended below) presented by Kelly Webster, Director of the Writing
Center and Ex-Officio member of the Writing Committee, were approved. The writing
committee noted patterns that writing learning outcomes were not included on syllabi and
there is a general lack of clarity among upper-division writing course instructors regarding
the major outcome to develop information technology and digital literacy. A letter will be
sent from the writing committee to department chairs/ writing instructors reminding them
that writing course syllabi must include writing learning outcomes. The Committee will
likely organize an Information Literacy workshop and provide resources to guide instructors
in the intent and pursuit of the information literacy outcome.
In each year, a rolling review of one quarter of all writing courses is conducted, and it was also
noted that a number of Upper Division Writing courses due for review this year were not
submitted and will therefore lose designation as approved Writing courses. In the next academic
year writing courses from the Professional Schools and from the social sciences will be
undergoing review, alongside courses newly seeking approval.
As part of the Writing Assessment Pilot Project, the Review Committee used an electronic rubric
to keep track of patterns in the writing courses. The data will provide information on how well
writing instructors understand writing course requirements in an effort to identify topics for
faculty development opportunities.

The Forestry and Biomedical Curriculum Items appended below were approved. Follow-up
is pending on FORS 250 and NRSM 426, as well as the program modification in CCS.
