Weix Members Absent/ Excused: L. Eagleheart, B. Holzworth, S. O’Hare, M. Triana Ex-Officio Present: N. Hinman J. Hickman J. Laine The minutes from 9/17/13 were approved. Communication Items: The meeting started with the UM Minute as suggested by President Engstrom in his State of the University Address. The Committee hopes to have a demonstration of UM 101 from the Office of Student Success. Many members viewed the course on Moodle and had questions/ comments. There is concern regarding non-native English speaking students understanding of English as well as oral proficiency. Many of the students are on exchange. They are smart students but fall behind because they struggle with understanding English. The issue will be investigated further after curriculum review. At that time a representative from the Office of International Programs will be invited to meet with ASCRC to explore resources available to the instructors and students to help them succeed. The video for subcommittee chairs/ members is helpful and should be posted on the Faculty Senate’s website for reference. ASCRC discussed whether the Faculty Senate should have its own YouTube account. Rather than set up a YouTube account for official Faculty Senate items, a file will be made of the video so it can be used for training this year. Business ASCRC reviewed, amended and approved the draft catalog language to end the UDWPA (appended below). Requirements can be removed from previous catalogs but not added. Unfortunately there is an inherent unfairness with retroactive changes such as eliminating a gating/exit exam. The revised AP / Clep Credit Policy (203.10) was reviewed. It requires additional language to clarify that an AP score of 3 guarantees elective and general education credit, but that specific course equivalencies may require a higher score as determined by the department. Chair Henderson will draft this language. The Committee discussed the procedures that contained catalog language and voted to eliminate Credit Maximums (203.20), Declaration of Major Policy (203.30), and Internships (203.60) because the information was duplicated in the catalog so the procedure was not necessary. It was noted that the online catalog should be indexed so that these policies could be easily found. The Registrar’s Office could use the index from the last printed catalog as a template for what items should be included in the index. The catalog language was removed from the Drop Add Policy (203.40) and Minors Policy (203.80). After striking the catalog language from Policy 203.40 the remaining information contradicted current catalog language, so the policy was also deleted. Next week Interim Associate Provost will have an update on the crosslisting pilot. The Committee may want to revisit crosslisted courses for inconsistencies at some point. The meeting was adjourned at 3.35 PM
