PROGRAM MODIFICATION FORM (4/15) Please attach/ submit additional documents as needed to fully complete each section of the form. I. DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Industrial Technology/Building Maintenance (Facility Management Engineering) II. SUMMARY Building Maintenance provides students with the skills and certifications necessary to manage facilities and direct those that perform the duties associated with it. The current program was developed over twenty years ago and since taking it over two years ago, I have updated and incorporated much needed curriculum to better fit the needs of the workforce. In doing so, in addition, the title Building Maintenance carries a custodial stigma that does not appeal to potential students, nor is it a title that employers are looking for. Students that complete the program are licensed and certified to operate high pressure equipment, handle refrigerant and hazardous waste and are well versed in OSHA to name a few. That being said, employers are now looking for employees that are qualified and knowledgeable to manage an entire facility, not simply “Fix Stuff”. I have requested to change the name to Facility Management Engineering and in turn am requesting to change the rubrics from BME xxx to FME xxx to further assist in removing the stigma associated with the current program. No other program in the MUS has courses listed under the old BME rubric, so this should be a simple matter to update the rubric from BME to FME to match the new program name and content. The name and rubric change will help our students find more and better jobs upon completion. III.
