I. DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM
Health and Human Performance – Exercise Science Applied Option
II. SUMMARY
This proposal is to requesting adjustments to the Exercise Science Applied curriculum to better serve the
student population enrolling in this option making the program more inclusive for all students. This
proposal is a part of a level I proposal also requesting a name change of this option to “Exercise
Science.”
The curriculum changes include adding a class from a choice of three classes that are pre-requisites for
courses required in the option: BIOB 160 or BIOH 112 or BIOH 113 which are listed as a pre-requisite
course for A&P. This addition will have little effect on any program as most of our students already take
one of these courses.
We are dropping the requirements for several courses.
These reductions will allow students greater flexibility in choosing electives pertinent to their long term
degree goals. While it appears to be a large reduction in required classes, the changes require students
to complete at least 18 credit hours of HHP electives, thus students will maintain as many credits as
were dropped, but have flexibility with other HHP courses as benefits their needs.

BGEN – We are dropping the requirement for BGEN 105S, but will retain it as a
recommended elective for students in this option thus many HHP students will continue to register for this course
Students have been previously required to take BIOB 160 (Principles of Living Systems) or BIOH 112 or BIOH 113
(Human Form and Function I or II) as a pre-requisite course for anatomy and physiology. We have now formally
added this as a requirement so that it reflects the credit hours required. BIOH and BIOB may be affected by this
proposal, but we expect the change to have little effect on BIOH or BIOB as most of our students in this option
have been taking the courses.

V. CATALOG LANGUAGE
Attach the current catalog language with the proposed changes clearly identified.
VI. JUSTIFICATION
The program changes reduce the number of required classes in the Health and Human Performance
Department by 16 credits but increases HHP required electives from 3 credits to 18 resulting in little
change in within department credit load. The remaining core required courses reflect a strong exercise
science program while those no longer required are more specialty courses which students may choose
to pursue specific jobs or post graduate degrees. Removing these courses gives students more options
for elective courses both within and outside HHP.
Additionally, we are formalizing the requirement of taking BIOB 160 (Principles of Living Systems) or
BIOH 112 or BIOH 113 (Human Form and Function I or II) as a prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology
so that students are clearly aware of the need for this prerequisite course prior to Anatomy and
Physiology.
All of these changes reflect the needs of our students and streamline the curriculum to help students
focus on their goals and needs while completing an effective program of study within 120 credit hours.
VII. SUBMISSION
