Program Modification Form
I Summary of Proposed Changes
School of Journalism
Department/program
The school seeks to institute new requirements for majors in the school’s
Summary
pre-professional program. The changes are contingent on the approval of
one new course, JRNL 170 Elements of News Writing, and the
renumbering and naming of an existing course (JRNL 227) to incorporate
introductory video skills now taught in a course we plan to delete, JRNL
251. We also propose to add one existing course (JRNL 105X) to the list of
courses students may choose from to meet other pre-professional program
requirements.

Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. 
The proposed course changes support our desire to give all majors more training in news writing and a
broader introduction to the principles of visual journalism, which include both still photography and
videography. Our request to add JRNL 105X Global Current Events to the list of course students may
choose from to meet other pre-professional requirements is based on the belief that a study of global
news and news providers is particularly relevant to our majors.
