Course Form (revised 5/1/12) (Instructions: http://www.umt.edu/facultysenate/documents/forms/courseform_instructionsX.aspx) I. Summary of Proposed Changes Dept / Program DBS Prefix and Course # BIOH U 424 Course Title Human Form and Function Teaching Assistant/Honors II Please check one or more X New course Delete course of the following: Course Changes Course Title Description Learning Outcomes Prerequisites Cross-listing Other Credits from _________ to________ Number / Level from _________ to________ Repeatability from _________ to________ Justification / explanation (required for ALL proposals) For new courses please provide rationale for why the course is needed, how it fits with exiting curriculum and whether there are curricular adjustments. This course offers students with an aptitude for teaching, a strong background in A&P, and a desire to learn more in-depth anatomical and physiological concepts an opportunity to assist with instruction of BIOH113 cadaver lab prosection tutorials. Additional exposure to the learning materials and the necessity of teaching that material to peers helps to solidify complex concepts. The prosection visits offered to the BIOH113 students would be logistically impossible without an undergraduate teaching staff well versed in the presentation of anatomical and physiological principles using cadavers, models and demonstrations. This course prepares students for presenting small group anatomical and physiological teaching rotations in a laboratory setting to adult learners with limited biology and chemistry coursework. This course was originally proposed in Fall 2011 as U BIOH 484; however the curriculum committee had concerns about the offering as the sister course, U BIOH 483, which was ultimately approved, had a repeatability of 4. The committee was unclear as to the difference between the two courses and thus the BIOH 484 course was not approved. As the fall and spring semesters cover different content and reflect different learning goals and outcomes, it is more appropriate to have separate course numbers for each semester. Content for spring semester includes: Endocrine System Cardiovascular System Respiratory System Digestive System (and metabolism) Urinary System (and fluid/electrolyte/pH balance) Reproductive System Attached to the syllabus are the updated learning goals and expected learning outcomes. I request a maximum credit of 3 credits. I would like to allow students to take the course for variable credit. Regardless of the credit load, the expectations for all students remain the same. I would also request that the repeatability of the course be limited to 4 credits. Although this does not meet any core or major requirements, I sometimes have students that want to serve an extra year as a teaching assistant for the course. Although rare, I would like to be able to offer those select students a repeat option. I would like to submit a short title of the course to read: TA: Form & Function II in order to better reflect the content covered and learning goals achieved during the semester. Has the Department gone through common course Review? X Yes No In process II. Syllabus/Assessment Information Required for new courses, learning outcome changes and course change from U to UG. Important: please spell out learning goals and learning outcomes clearly in the syllabus. Learning Goals are a list of what students should know, understand, or be able to do at the end of the course, including essential information and knowledge or skills relevant to the subject area. Learning Outcomes are measures of performance or behavior that indicate, to the teacher and the students, that students understand the material, and what criteria differentiates among different levels of understanding. Attach syllabus at the end of the document. III.
