Initially FORS440 (formerly Timber
Management I) and FORS441 (Timber
Management II) were linked with the idea
that the projects (primarily timber sales)
students put together in the fall would then
be followed into the spring semester with
students performing timber sale
administration duties. In practice, however,
this has not worked for a variety of reasons
and the two courses need to be decoupled.
The change in course description reflects this
decoupling of FORS 440 and 441 and does
not change course content. The new title
"Forest Contract Administration" also
recognizes that other forest operations
beyond timber sales may serve as instructive
class projects and serve a broader need
within the College of Forestry and
Conservation and at Lubrecht Experimental
Forest.

TBD
1. Course Description:
The development of project documents, bidding procedures, and contracts for forest operations. In
this course students will perform all field and office work necessary to carry out a forest operation. The
specific forest operation will vary by class and may include operations such as timber sales, pre-commercial
thinning, prescribed fire, reforestation, or other functions of a working forest. Forest operations will be
coordinated closely with managers at Lubrecht Experiment Forest (LEF) to ensure compliance with forest
practices and University contracting procedures.
2. Course Learning Objectives:
 Design a timber sale or other forest operation (e.g. prescribed burn, reforestation, road construction),
including field layout and all proper documentation.
 Understand other resource implications of forest operations and ways to mitigate issues.
 Administration of a timber sale or other forest operation.
 Tracking of operations, for example forest products from a timber sale or progress of a road project.
 Know how to write and use contracting instruments such as timber sale contracts.
3. Course Policies:
 All assignments are due at the BEGINNING of class or lab. Late assignments will not be accepted.
 All work must be neat, legible and complete.
 While you are allowed to work with fellow students on individual assignments, all submitted
assignments must represent your own individual work.
 All students must practice academic honesty. Academic misconduct is subject to an academic
penalty by the course instructor and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University.
 All students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code. The Code is available for review
online at http://life.umt.edu/vpsa/student_conduct.php.
4. Grading:
The majority of the class will be participation-based and will include written sale documents, memos
describing interaction with contractors and the public, product tracking reports, and summaries of
conversations with sale administrators and other professionals.
5. Schedule:
Each offering of the course will be unique with a project on LEF selected that will both allow for the
achievement of course learning objectives and complete useful work for LEF managers. The schedule of
events will vary to accommodate the particular requirements of the operation. Likewise, course meeting
times will be set by the class in conjunction with managers at LEF.
VI Department Summary (Required if several forms are submitted) In a separate document list course
number, title, and proposed change for all proposals.
VII Copies and Electronic Submission. After approval, submit original, one copy, summary of
proposals and electronic file to the Faculty Senate Office, UH 221, camie.foos@mso.umt.edu.
