Certificate in Accounting Information Systems
The Accounting Information Systems (AIS) certificate prepares students for careers
that bridge accounting and management information systems, such as consulting,
internal audit, external audit, or other positions where more than a basic knowledge
of either accounting or MIS is necessary. While most appropriate for a student
majoring in accounting or MIS, this certificate is available to any undergraduate
business major. To obtain an AIS certificate, a student must (1) complete the
requirements for one of the School of Business Administration’s majors, (2) meet
with an AIS certificate advisor, and (3) complete the following courses, with an
average GPA of 3.0 or better in these 25 credits: ACTG 203, ACTG 321, ACTG
305, ACTG 306, ACTG 411, MIS 371, MIS 370, MIS 373, and MIS 479. Due to
pre-requisite requirements and course scheduling, meeting with an AIS advisor
early is crucial.

Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. 
We have seen an increase in recent years in both student and employer interest in a curriculum that
prepares students for careers in consulting, internal audit, external audit, or other positions where more
than a basic knowledge of either accounting or MIS is necessary.
At the end of spring 2010 semester, an electronic survey was distributed to all accounting and MIS
majors. The overwhelming majority of respondents showed serious interest in the certificate, with
most saying they would obtain or would have obtained the certificate, even if it required four
additional courses beyond their major. Cursory research of other institutions offering AIS programs
found approximately 20 programs offering an AIS major, option, emphasis, concentration, track, or
double major.
Informal feedback from advisory board members and those in industry indicate interest in this
certificate, depending on the courses required. Many of these employers will only hire the best
students (GPA cutoffs of 3.0 or higher), but they desire the cross-over background. A GPA standard
applied only to the certificate coursework ensures students master both accounting and MIS at a
sufficient level, and it promotes the quality of students obtaining the certificate. Students completing
the AIS certificate coursework will be prepared to take the CISA (Certified Information Systems
Auditor) exam with minor self-study. The CISA is valued by employers in the fields mentioned
above, with some providing bonuses for obtaining it. Two SoBA faculty are CISAs (Firth and
Herron).
