Time: Monday/Wednesday-Noon- 2:00 ; Friday- noon- 2:00 (Rehearsal)
Description:
This class and lab are designed to provide an ability to devise a systematic approach to directing
two unique genres—new works and musicals. The structure of the musical will be explored by
devising a method of analysis of book, lyrics, and score. The second half of the semester will
address the peculiar requirements of directing original and premiere works. Particular attention will
be paid to the director/playwright relationship, play analysis of developmental works, the role of
dramaturgy, and the function of the director in staged readings, workshops, and first productions.
Objectives:
Through in class rehearsals of songs and scenes we will address and develop techniques for
approaching musical theatre and new works.
Examine the role of director as interpreter of the composer’s, librettist’s, and lyricist’s vision.
Clarify and define the specific process of collaborating with the musical director and choreographer
in mounting a play musical or operetta
Explore storytelling, character, and action as it is developed through song and dance
To study the unique method of textual analysis a director employs for musical theatre and new
genres.
Texts:
Writing the Broadway Musical by Aaron Frankel
Making Musicals by Tom Jones
Other assigned reading will include various articles, essays, and trade publications that relate to specific
topics with which we deal in class.
Departmental Policies:
All Theatre & Dance students must have an in-depth knowledge of the practices and
procedures outlined in the School of Theatre & Dance Handbook. The Handbook is
available online at http:/sfa.umt.edu/drama/index.html.
Academic Misconduct and the Student Conduct Code:
All students must practice academic honesty. Academic misconduct is subject to an
academic penalty by the course instructor and/or disciplinary sanction by the University. All
students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code. The Code is unavailable for
review online at: www.umt.edu/SA/VPS/Index.cfm/page/1321.
