THTR 675 Directing VI Jere Hodgin jere.hodgin@umontana.edu McGill 216 243-2877 Office Hours: 2:00- 3:30 Tuesday/Thursday and by Appointment Location: McGill 125 Time: Monday/Wednesday-Noon- 2:00 ; Friday- noon- 2:00 (Rehearsal) Description: This class and lab are designed to provide an ability to devise a systematic approach to directing two unique genres—new works and musicals. The structure of the musical will be explored by devising a method of analysis of book, lyrics, and score. The second half of the semester will address the peculiar requirements of directing original and premiere works. Particular attention will be paid to the director/playwright relationship, play analysis of developmental works, the role of dramaturgy, and the function of the director in staged readings, workshops, and first productions. Objectives: Through in class rehearsals of songs and scenes we will address and develop techniques for approaching musical theatre and new works. Examine the role of director as interpreter of the composer’s, librettist’s, and lyricist’s vision. Clarify and define the specific process of collaborating with the musical director and choreographer in mounting a play musical or operetta Explore storytelling, character, and action as it is developed through song and dance To study the unique method of textual analysis a director employs for musical theatre and new genres. Texts: Writing the Broadway Musical by Aaron Frankel Making Musicals by Tom Jones Other assigned reading will include various articles, essays, and trade publications that relate to specific topics with which we deal in class.
