Justification for proposed change We are proposing a new course title to more accurately reflect the nature of the course and to allow for additional courses to be renamed. THTR 575 Directing IV Jere Hodgin jere.hodgin@umontana.edu McGill 216 243-2877 Office Hours: 2:30- 4:00 pm, Monday/Wednesday and by Appointment Description: Directing Shakespeare is unlike directing the modern realistic text. The course will focus on the challenges of working with heightened language, Shakespeare’s characters, and text analysis. We will examine a variety of rehearsal tools to be utilized in approaching specific directing challenges when working with Shakespeare. We will explore the productions of recognized directors of Shakespeare and examine the body of their work. Objectives: Address and develop how the director leads actors to in-depth explorations of Shakespeare’s text Enhance and develop the director’s exploration of ‘character’ within Shakespeare’s plays Explore the director’s challenges in dealing with Shakespeare’s specific dramaturgical demands Work with scenes to introduce to actors a range of choices to achieve his/her objectives when performing Shakespeare Text: Mastering Shakespeare by Scott Kaiser Note: In addition, I will assign various video recordings, articles, essays, and books that relate to specific topics with which we deal in class. A maximum of three absences will be permitted. Additional absences will result in a reduction in grade for each day missed.
