Description:
Directing Shakespeare is unlike directing the modern realistic text. The course will focus on the
challenges of working with heightened language, Shakespeare’s characters, and text analysis. We
will examine a variety of rehearsal tools to be utilized in approaching specific directing challenges
when working with Shakespeare. We will explore the productions of recognized directors of
Shakespeare and examine the body of their work.
Objectives:
Address and develop how the director leads actors to in-depth explorations of Shakespeare’s text
Enhance and develop the director’s exploration of ‘character’ within Shakespeare’s plays
Explore the director’s challenges in dealing with Shakespeare’s specific dramaturgical demands
Work with scenes to introduce to actors a range of choices to achieve his/her objectives when
performing Shakespeare
Text:
Mastering Shakespeare by Scott Kaiser
Note: In addition, I will assign various video recordings, articles, essays, and books that
relate to specific topics with which we deal in class.
Graded Course Requirements:
In-Class Rehearsals (20%)
Presentation of Monologue (10%)
Presentation of Directed Scenes (20%)
Written Research Paper and Presentation on Directors (15%)
Log of Outside Rehearsal Activities (10%)
Participation (20%)
Detailed Self Evaluation of Progress (5%)
Note: As this class is based on participation, attendance is requisite. A maximum of three absences will
be permitted. Additional absences will result in a reduction in grade for each day missed. The
collaborative and creative processes of rehearsal are the foundation of our class. Mutual feedback and a free
exchange of ideas are necessary.
