U 141 Elementary Blackfoot I 4cr. Offered intermittently autumn. An introduction to the Blackfoot language and culture. Students will learn how to write and read Blackfoot as well as how to conduct simple conversations. Justification: How does the course fit with the existing curriculum? Why is it needed? The proposed course has been offered as NAS 195 for three years (including Autumn 2009). The Department of Native American Studies examines the contemporary and past experiences and life ways of the first Americans from their perspectives. However, there are no Native American language courses offered on campus. This course is designed for both Native American and non-Native American students so they can better understand human similarities and differences. This language course will enhance the development of better communication and cross–cultural relationships. Are there curricular adjustments to accommodate teaching this course? In this session, you will study basics of the Blackfoot language including simple phrases and some grammatical information. The class will introduce role-playing as a tool that will emerge you into a language experience. Included in this session is a lab which will enhance your language performance and allow plenty of practice of both written and verbal commands. In addition, some Blackfoot history and culture will be introduced as it portrays to the language. Course Requirements Assignments There will be materials on Blackboard that will involve some new phrases and material already use in the previous session. Every week, a new content will be posted for your lab work. You will work on a separate sheet of paper with the materials on the Blackboard, and turn it in on the following Monday’s class. You will be graded based on completion of your work and points will be awarded on finished work. Tests and Grading Students’ grades will be based on lab assignments, quizzes, final, and attendance.
