U 141 Elementary Blackfoot I 4cr. Offered intermittently autumn. An introduction to the
Blackfoot language and culture. Students will learn how to write and read Blackfoot as well as
how to conduct simple conversations.
Justification: How does the course fit with the existing curriculum? Why is it needed?
The proposed course has been offered as NAS 195 for three years (including Autumn 2009). The
Department of Native American Studies examines the contemporary and past experiences and life
ways of the first Americans from their perspectives. However, there are no Native American
language courses offered on campus. This course is designed for both Native American and
non-Native American students so they can better understand human similarities and differences.
This language course will enhance the development of better communication and cross–cultural
relationships.
Are there curricular adjustments to accommodate teaching this course?
None
Complete for UG courses. (UG courses should be assigned a 400 number).
