Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. We propose to change the name of the Applied Health Science option to Community Health option. The phrase “community health” more closely reflects our curricular offerings. Additionally, students graduating with a Bachelors degree in community health are eligible to take the national exam to become Certified Health Education Specialists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2009) projects employment of health educators to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014, and that people seeking work in this field will have favorable job prospects. We have reduced the number of elective courses for this option and increased the number of required courses to assure that our program follows the national curricular framework for community health education programs. The more focused option will actually reduce the number of credits required for the major from 95 credits to 91 credits. These minor program changes will ensure students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the certification exam and/or to find employment as health education specialists in community or government based health oriented settings.
