Program Modification Form I Summary of Proposed Changes Masters degree in Health and Human Performance – Exercise Science Department/program Option This proposal will help us to meet the changing needs of our students and to Summary broaden the scope of job and future educational possibilities for our graduate students. We propose adding one core course to the exercise science graduate option and to increase the number of departmental elective options. Additionally we propose to identify two distinct tracks (Applied and Research). Both tracks require the same core classes, but have different recommendations for departmental and cognate electives. The Research track would require a Thesis, while the Applied track requires an internship and can choose either a thesis or a professional paper. The number of required credits is increased for the thesis track (37 to 41). The Applied track requires 42 credits. IV Catalog Language If you are proposing a change to an existing program or major, please cut and paste the requirements as they appear in the current catalog below. www.umt.edu/catalog Please see attached sheet. Formatting did not work when the text was pasted into this box. Please provide the proposed copy as you wish it to appear in the catalog. Please see attached sheet. Formatting did not work when the text was pasted into this box. Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. Our program has historically prepared students for doctoral programs in exercise science and for other areas requiring research experience. A review of the needs and goals of our exercise science students has shown us that many graduate students are interested in coaching, health industry jobs, positions in cardiac rehabilitation and other jobs which our curriculum did little to prepare them for. The new courses (Advanced exercise prescription, Coaching principles, and the ACSM HFS/CSCS Preparation classes) will help our students to prepare for jobs that are in the field of physical activity and health as well as preparing educated practitioners and future Ph.D.s. What other programs are affected by your proposal? Obtain signatures as requested above. None V Copies and Electronic Submission Once approved, the original, a paper copy and an electronic file are submitted to the Faculty Senate Office, UH 221 (camie.foos@mso.umt.edu). VI Department Summary Required if several proposals are submitted. In a separate document list program title and proposed change of all proposals. Current Listing on Graduate School Web Site The exercise science option is designed for those who desire in-depth study of human movement related to acute and chronic exercise in preparation for careers in academic teaching and research, in sport science, work physiology, directing exercise programs for special client populations, or preparation for doctoral study. Proposed Listing on Graduate School Web Site The exercise science option is designed for those who desire in-depth study of human movement related to acute and chronic exercise. Two tracks of study are offered: The Research Track prepares students for doctoral study and careers in academic teaching and research as well as other research positions in the exercise science and medical fields. The Applied Track prepares students for work in the areas of health/fitness industry, sport science, work physiology, directing exercise programs for special client populations, or coaching. Current listing on the HHP Web Site with Program Details: EXERCISE SCIENCE The Thesis option is designed for those advanced students who intend to pursue further graduate studies in Exercise Physiology or another related field of Health Sciences. This option involves a more intensive study of laboratory methods and statistical and research design. An additional expectation of students selecting this option involves assistance with ongoing research of faculty and other graduate students. The Professional Paper option is intended for those students who plan to pursue professional careers in Exercise or Applied Health Sciences (corporate/adult fitness, cardiac rehabilitation). This option involves additional required course work and the preparation of a non-data based professional paper (i.e., comprehensive review).
