U EET 298 Internship 2 cr. Offered every term. Extended classroom experience providing practical
application of classroom learning through on the job training in a student’s field of study. This experience
increases student skills, prepares them for initial employment, and increases occupational awareness and
professionalism. Prior approval must be obtained from the faculty supervisor.
Justification: How does the course fit with the existing curriculum? Why is it needed?
Internships create a valuable bridge for students from the academic setting to the workplace environment.
They provide an important connection to industry for students engaged in applied certificate and degree
program.
We request the addition of the course EET 298 Internship for the Electronics Technology program. We are
requesting this addition as we do not expect common course numbering to take place for our Electronics
Technology program due to the unique nature of this program.

Prerequisites

Minimum of “C” in all program courses

Recommendation of the Program Director from your field of study.
Class Meetings
This class is slated to meet Friday from 3:10-4:00 in room HB06 September 4 through October 16. There
will be weeks we do not meet. These will be announced in class.
Course Description
On-the-job training in positions requiring advanced computer competencies. This experience increases
students’ skills, prepares them for initial employment, and increases occupational awareness and
professionalism. Students work a minimum of six hours each week at an approved site and attend
scheduled one-hour seminars.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will:

Complete 90 hours of service in a professional working environment.

Demonstrate technical skills and professionalism while completing service in an occupationallyrelated setting.

Prepare for initial employment.

Complete a professional application packet, portfolio, and presentation.

Professional Employment Preparation Seminars Attendance
All students are required to attend designated professional employment seminars. Seminar schedule will
be available at a later date.
Field Experience Requirements
Students are responsible for completing the following:

Secure an internship position

Complete and submit “Learning Agreement” paperwork prior to initiating field work. Completed
paperwork must include approval signatures from the Site Supervisor and Program Director. No
hours toward the field experience will be recorded until this is done.

Complete and submit the “Learning Agreement Goals for Computer Technology Internship” with
all approval signatures within the first two weeks of employment.

Complete and submit weekly field experience time cards (green sheets) to Internship Director.
Incomplete card will not be accepted.

Submit completed “Midterm Evaluation” at 45 hours.

Complete 90 hours of supervised work at the “Learning Agreement” site.
Site Supervisor will collaborate with the faculty Internship Director in providing a midterm evaluation and
a final evaluation. A copy will be forwarded to the student. Students are responsible for finding their
own internship sites, Faculty Members are available to assist.
Portfolio, Resume Packet, and Final Presentation
Students are required to complete a resume packet, portfolio, and a final presentation describing the
internship experience.

University Policy for dropping courses or requesting grading/credit status changes can be found in the

familiar with the policy.
Accommodations for Disabilities:
Eligible students with disabilities will receive appropriate accommodations in this course when requested
in a timely manner. Please be prepared to provide the instructor with a letter from the DSS Coordinator
and a description of the requested accommodation after class or by appointment with the instructor.

the course instructor and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University. All students need to be familiar

Course Management Software
A Blackboard Course Shell http://courseware.umt.edu will be utilized to supplement material for the
course.
Some Final Notes

Previous work experience cannot be accepted toward internship course.

Ideally, the required number of hours should be spread over the entire semester so that the
student is able to experience the depth of a variety of tasks, circumstances, and solutions that
likely will not occur in a condensed time-frame.

The grade Incomplete “I” will be assigned until all internship requirements have been met.
Students have one year to complete internship requirements before the "I" grade option reverts
to an "F" grade.

All Internship positions must have prior approval from Program Director to assure qualification.
VI Department Summary (Required if several forms are submitted) In a separate document list course
number, title, and proposed change for all proposals.
VII Copies and Electronic Submission. After approval, submit original, one copy, summary of
proposals and electronic file to the Faculty Senate Office, UH 221, camie.foos@mso.umt.edu.
