It is intended to provide students [representing a variety of majors, backgrounds, and experiences] with an in-depth understanding of some of the world’s most remarkable and famous archaeological discoveries. Due to the diverse temporal and geographic range of such findings, the course examines a chronological range that spans the past four million years on a global geographic scale. After taking this class, students are expected to better understand the ways in which those discoveries can be examined as case studies of issues influencing the modern world (e.g., climate change, regional and global economic networks, overpopulation, hunger, etc). Moreover, after taking this course, students will be armed with the ability to critically evaluate archaeological and historical findings they observe in mainstream media and professional journals. By examining archaeological remains (e.g., artifacts, ecofacts, skeletal material) as well as ancient texts when appropriate, this course provides students with an understanding of historical events and related environmental contexts related to the erection of some of the world’s most famous monuments and archaeological sites (e.g., Pyramids of Giza, Stonehenge, Easter Island, King Tut’s tomb and other findings in the Valley of the Kings, Çatalhöyük, Pompeii, the Iceman, Kennewick Man, among others). A methodological component (e.g. historiography or ethnography) must be apparent. will study the field notebooks and related publications of archaeologists associated with these findings and discuss methods and approaches to the construction of the extensive timeline of human (and prehuman) history/prehistory on this planet. The focus is the entire world and the entire span of time during which humans have existed and left archaeological remains. The methodology is archaeological and ethnographic. V. The learning goals for this course are dedicated to examining archaeological remains and ancient forms of writing when appropriate, to study the timeline of human interaction with the environment – including attempts to control the natural world and to construct built environments in the name of survival, adaptation, and political authority, to name a few. By comparing different cultures and their archaeological remains/achievements, it is possible to give students the tools to understand the longterm consequences of human behavior and decision-making. The bulk of historical events and developments we study are associated with some of the world’s most famous monuments and archaeological sites, which ends up providing students with a type of mnemonic device for retrieving information about the complexities of the “human timeline.” VII. This course highlights major archaeological discoveries on a on a worldwide, environmental, political, and economic scale and will examine how archaeology evolved from a curiosity, into a pursuit of high adventure, and finally, to a science. The assigned selections from this book are posted on our course website; just peruse the schedule and you will find them as links on the appropriate dates. We will also examine new discoveries presented in professional journals as appropriate and as they are made available. COURSE STRUCTURE: This course meets for 50 minutes, three days a week, throughout the semester. Class meetings will include lectures, films, in-class activities/discussions, and weekly quizzes. Students may be required to participate in class by sharing their ideas with the rest of the class in informal discussions. Also, students can gain participation points when they are periodically asked to answer a certain question or when they are asked to outline what they learned in class that day by jotting down a few notes and turning them in to the instructor. ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken frequently and will help make decisions about a student’s final grade in borderline cases. Also, there will be some in-class projects and participation exercises that require attendance to get full points.
