Through the guidance and support of the
board of trustees, advisory councils, university
leadership, alumni and friends, Lourdes
University now offers its most robust private
college experience ever.
As President, I am proud of our Catholic
and Franciscan university and grateful to our
sponsors, the Sisters of St. Francis. Thousands
of Lourdes graduates have been able to achieve
their degree because of Mother Adelaide
Sandusky’s vision and the shared dedication of
Sylvania Franciscans.
In December, the Sisters of St. Francis will
begin celebrating their centennial anniversary.
On behalf of the entire Lourdes community, I
congratulate and thank Congregational Minister
Sr. Mary Jon Wagner, OSF, and all the Sylvania
Franciscans past and present for enriching our
lives and communities.
Sincerely,
David Livingston, PhD

Men's and women's soccer debuts

A
s the school year begins, Lourdes
University has added two more
sports to its lineup of
intercollegiate teams. The Gray Wolves are
sponsoring men’s and
women’s soccer for the first time,
bringing the total number of varsity
sports at the school to 15.
The Gray Wolves play their home
matches at Wildcat Stadium,
part of a shared complex between
Lourdes University and Sylvania
Northview High School. The
lighted stadium just had synthetic
turf installed along with scoreboard
improvements. In addition, a new
grass practice field was installed
at mid-campus. “Both the midcampus grass field and the turf
stadium have been great facilities for
our women to train on,” women’s
head coach Jackie Donovan says.
The men’s team is guided by
Barry Spitzer who has 15 years of
head coaching experience. Coach
Spitzer arrives from Wallace State
Community College where he was
a two-time Region 22 Coach of the
Year. He has recruited a roster of
23 players, combining 13 transfers
and 10 freshmen, for the inaugural
campaign with student-athletes
from across the globe including
Jamaica, Sweden, Germany, Ivory
Coast, Peru, Canada, and England,
and eight states.
“I am very excited about the
inaugural team. We have a great
group of young men from all over
the country and the world. These
young men have grown close in a
short amount of time, and the team
is very enthusiastic about making
an impact on the field, in the
classroom, and in the community,”
coach Spitzer says.
Lourdes men opened the inaugural
campaign on August 28 at Grace
Bible before playing the first
home match in program history
against Walsh on September
5. The Gray Wolves face a
rigorous 2015 schedule while
playing in the Wolverine-Hoosier
Athletic Conference (WHAC).
The National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
reigning national champion, and
the number one and two teams
in the nation are WHAC teams
according to this year’s preseason
poll. “We have high aspirations and
believe that we can be competitive
in the conference and make the
WHAC tournament,” adds coach
Spitzer.
On the women’s side, coach
Donovan arrived from Adrian
College. She has compiled an
impressive career in a relatively
short time, leading a team to
the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association regular season
championship. She has 20 players
on her first roster, including nine
from the northwest Ohio region.
Like the men’s team, the women
sport a mixture of 12 transfers and
eight freshmen. “We have been able
to pull a great deal of talent from
the region, especially from junior
college programs. Those players
bring with them experience and
the leadership that is vital this first
year,” says coach Donovan.
The women opened the season
on September 2 at Rochester, MI,
before making their home debut
at Wildcats Stadium on the 12th
against Bluffton. The women
also face a challenging schedule,
including a pair of opponents
ranked in the NAIA preseason top20 poll. “Our goal is to compete
from day one. Our mentality isn’t
that of a first year program but that
of a program that is going to be
relentless in our pursuit of our team
goals,” adds coach Donovan.
Both programs will host teams on
Homecoming Saturday, October

A time-honored tradition is born
O
ften the most
selfless actions
in life are the
most rewarding.
Ask any parent,
grandparent
or volunteer.
Being of service
to others is a
worthwhile
endeavor and a fulfilling
experience. Terry Bossert
subscribes to this philosophy.
Throughout his life he has always
found time to help those in need.
“It is important to give back; to
provide an encouraging word or
lend a helping hand. Not only is
it beneficial to the individuals you
serve, but also to yourself and the
community at large,” he says. In
the past few years, Terry has begun
to make a valuable difference in
many Lourdes students’ lives –
empowering them to achieve their
educational goals.
“My daughter Pam ('89, AAS,
Occupational Therapy) received a
wonderful education from Lourdes
and now my granddaughter Emily
is following in her footsteps. It was
important to me to help make a
Lourdes education more attainable
for those who wanted to attend
a private university but struggled
with the financial costs,” he says.
10
Making a difference
A self-styled entrepreneur who
manages his own company Lee
Terry Holdings, LLC, Terry has
endeavored to always make a
difference in the organizations
in which he worked as well as
the greater community. Wanting
to assist Lourdes students, the
budding philanthropist contacted
the university development
office to establish a pass-through
scholarship. Through their
assistance, he soon discovered the
exponential power of planned
giving and what impact it could
have on future generations.
Providing for
Lourdes students
As a university Legacy Society
member, Terry has made provisions
in his will to fund 14 scholarships
– one for each Gray Wolves
team sanctioned by the National
Association for Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA). Because of this
selfless act, future student athletes
on the baseball, basketball, cross
country, golf, lacrosse, soccer,
softball, and volleyball teams will
have the opportunity to receive
much needed scholarship funds.
This champion of education
has even made provisions
for six non-athletic endowed
scholarships – one to help veterans
and the others to assist biology,

business, education, healthcare
administration, and social work
majors. In fact, Terry has set a
university record for the largest
number of planned gifts created
for the purpose of establishing
endowed scholarships.
Inspired by others
The down-to-earth gentleman has
also funded scholarships that assist
students with financial need now.
The Tim Berta baseball scholarship
is named after the inspirational
player who has defied all odds and
achieved great milestones in his life.
“Tim ('15, MOL, Organizational
Leadership) is an amazing person
who by example encourages and
motivates so many to pursue and
achieve their goals. What better
way to honor his good work than
to do so in the sport he so loves,”
he adds.
What brings the most satisfaction
to Terry is the longevity of his gift.
“Students will reap the rewards
for years to come. I never thought
it would be possible for me to
make such an enduring and lasting
gift for today’s and tomorrow’s
students. The impact that this
type of gift has is immeasurable; it
is life changing in so many ways.
For those who’ve wanted to make
a difference through scholarships
but thought they couldn’t afford
it, planned giving is the perfect
method of fulfilling those goals and
impacting so many lives.” U

Criminal justice student makes history
I
n 2014, Aaron Henson
became the first Lourdes
student to gain acceptance
into the Ohio State Highway
Patrol Academy. After 25
weeks of intense paramilitary
training, on a beautiful sunlit
day in April 2015, cadet Henson
graduated as a member of the
157th class.
“Lourdes’ excellent criminal justice
professors and education had
prepared me for the academic and
procedural portions. Going into
the academy, I knew it would be
physically and mentally demanding
and it definitely was. The biggest
takeaway from the academy was
the importance of officer safety.
What I didn’t expect were the
changes in me as an individual. I
matured, became more diligent
and self-reliant, and improved my
time management skills,” he says.
After graduation, the ensuing 60
days saw Ohio State Highway
patrol trooper Henson in fieldtraining at his assigned post in the
Bucyrus District, Post 90 in Milan,
OH. “Field training prepared me
for the dynamic, uncontrolled
environment in which I and my
fellow officers work,” says trooper
Henson. Today, he is enjoying the
daily duties and the opportunity to
fulfill his oath of office.
Raised in Sylva, NC, the bright
and talented officer still retains his
southern accent and manners he
learned from his parents Anthony
and Karissa Henson. “My dad
is a groundskeeper at a nearby
college and my mom is a teacher
assistant in first grade with the
14
public schools as well as a freelance
photographer. They instilled in
me a moral compass that guides
me every day, and a strong work
ethic. They were always available,
including all the times they
cheered on my older brother and
me at sporting events,” he says.
“Aaron’s dad and I are very proud
of him and his accomplishments.
He worked hard to achieve his
goals and fulfill his dream,”
adds Mrs. Henson. The couple
are definitely proud of their
sons' accomplishments. Aaron
is beginning his career as a state
trooper, and their oldest son Adam
is a mechanical engineer.
Becoming an Ohio State Highway
patrol trooper was meaningful to
Aaron in many ways. In addition
to achieving his own goal, he
also fulfilled the dream of his late
grandfather Ben Henson. “My
grandfather worked several jobs
to provide for his family. While
he took great pride in his role as a
security officer in the small North
Carolina town in which he lived,
his dream had always been to
become a highway state trooper.

When I graduated from the
academy, it felt as if he was there
celebrating with me.”
Two of the first “to do” items he
had after graduation were to get
an apartment and bring his best
friend Sarge, a 9-year old German
Shepherd, to Ohio. The two were
inseparable back home, with Sarge
accompanying him whenever
he went hunting for bears or
raccoons.
While he misses his family and the
mountains back home, Ohio is his
new home. When not working,
Aaron enjoys riding in his new
sports car, fishing, spending
time outdoors, playing golf and
basketball or just relaxing in his
hammock.
Next on his agenda is to become
certified to work with K-9s,
achieve mobile field force special
response (SWAT) status, and to
finish his bachelor’s degree. “When
I was accepted into the academy,
I was registered for my final
semester. I am determined to finish
my degree. With just two courses
left, I definitely need to make that
happen.” U

Working on her bucket list
I
n 2009, Courtney Gilliland
wrote a letter to the Rachael
Ray Show about her personal
bucket list. One of the main
items she wanted to check
off on the list was to be a part of a
Broadway production.
The Sylvania teenager did not
receive or expect a response.
Courtney was a shy individual
throughout grade school who
preferred to sing in the privacy of
her own bedroom. Encouraged
by her beloved Aunt Carol, in
high school she became involved
in the band, choir and theater.
Desiring to become a pediatric
nurse, Courtney would later apply
to Lourdes University as a transfer
student and qualify for academic
and Drama Society scholarships.
Fast forward to fall
2014
The Rachael Ray Show contacted
the nursing major and Drama
Society student and invited her
and her aunt Carol to be guests on
the show. The arranged plan was
to have Courtney sing on stage.
Unbeknownst to her, the show’s
producers arranged for Broadway
sensation and multi-talented artist
Kristin Chenoweth to sing with
her in front of a live audience!
Courtney is grateful for the
opportunity to have been on the
Rachael Ray Show, to check off
one of her items on her bucket list
and most importantly, to have met
one of her idols. A few months
after the show aired, Courtney and
a friend enjoyed complimentary
tickets to On the 20th Century!, the
Broadway show starring Kristin
Chenoweth.
The last few years
have been a time of growth
for Courtney personally and
professionally. She has pursued her
dream of achieving a Bachelor of
Science in Nursing degree, acted
and sang in Drama Society events
and auditioned for several regional
productions.
After receiving her BSN in spring
2016, the talented songstress and
actor wants to pursue a Doctor of
Nurse Practitioner degree. “I’m
thinking of staying in the region
for the first two years and then
moving to the East Coast – either
New York or New Jersey. That way,
I can have my career, continue
pursuing my education and be
close enough to actively audition
for Broadway and off-Broadway
productions,” she says.
With her dedication and
drive, Courtney will no doubt
continue to check off items on her
bucket list. U

A strong community
P
ursuing a bachelor’s
degree in a competitive
nursing program can be
a daunting challenge.
To assist students in
achieving their academic and
professional success, the College of
Arts and Sciences offers a unique
academic opportunity. The PreNursing Learning Community
(PNLC) allows students to take
their general education classes
together. The bond they develop
as a cohort continues in their
junior and senior years as they
fulfill their core classes and clinical
requirements.
A Nursing graduate Aileen Santry
(’13, BSN) is a great example
of a PNLC participant who has
achieved professional success. This
year, she accepted a position as
RN at Georgetown University’s
Medical Intensive Care Unit.
Before working in the ICU, she
first had to complete a 6-month
bridge program.
A Notre Dame Academy graduate,
Aileen worked as an extern at
St. Vincent Medical Center
throughout her college years
and accepted a nursing position
Since 2007, the PNLC offers
16 new pre-nursing majors each
year the opportunity to take
seven courses together including
anatomy & physiology I and
II, first year experience, English
composition I and II, and
chemistry. PNLC sophomores
serve as peer coaches for new
students. The program is definitely
a success. The graduation rate for
PNLC participants is 55.56%,
and the first-year retention rate
for the 2014-2015 cohort is 82%
compared to the national average
of 80%.
“These general education courses
are instrumental in preparing
pre-nursing students for success
in gaining admission to the major
and in graduating,” says Christine
Boudrie, MD, PNLC faculty
member. Dr. Boudrie and three
other arts and sciences faculty work
across the disciplines to provide the
best learning experience possible.

of our duties was to successfully
place these individuals in

she says.
Her desire to help those in need
began during a high school trip
to Appalachia. Since that time,
she has participated in service
trips to Honduras, and Habitat
for Humanity projects in Florida,
North Carolina and Texas. A
MC3 AmeriCorps participant,
she also completed 300 hours of
service volunteering at Cherry
Street Mission and Sunshine.
While at Lourdes, Aileen was one
of a few select students chosen
to participate in the annual
Franciscan Pilgrimage to Assisi and
Rome, Italy.
“I am so grateful for the strong
educational and campus ministry
programs Lourdes offers. This
university allowed me to achieve
my degree while fulfilling my
personal goals of helping others,”
she says. When asked who the
professors she remembers most
fondly are, she immediately
responds, “Chris Boudrie!”
there after passing her boards.
One year later, she accepted a

a medical facility for homeless

Preparing for professional success
S

prepared students to
achieve post graduation
success. Recognizing
the ever increasing
global world in which Lourdes
graduates live, the university
has strengthened its internship

number of study abroad

Teaching by example
College can truly change the
course of one’s life. When Megan
Eisenhour graduated high school
and enrolled at a local public
university, she was unsure of
the best major to pursue. She
considered possible careers as a
doctor, physical therapist, nurse
or even a writer. However, life as a
public university student changed
her perspective. “I attended for
one year and experienced the huge
class sizes and non-personalized
education. My chemistry class
was a 500-person lecture! It made
me reminiscent for my small
hometown education and helped
me realize the career I really

wanted to pursue – that of an
educator.”
The Pemberville native heard
about Lourdes University from a
friend and decided to come for a
campus visit. “It was a perfect fit
for me and my life. I was able to
live at home, work in my family’s
business (Eisenhour Motor Sales)
and pursue my education,”
she says. Double majoring in
Adolescence to Young Adult (AYA)
education and English, the fourth
generation Eisenhour Motor Sales
employee believes transferring to
Lourdes was the “best decision
I ever made. Lourdes is the only
college that understands and
accommodates a student who
needs to work while pursuing his
or her education.”
As she approached her senior year
at Lourdes, Megan was encouraged
to complete some of her student
teaching in Brazil through an
EDA 450 course. She decided to
take advantage of the opportunity
that did not cost much more than
the actual class. “For 10 weeks, I
lived with a Brazilian host family
and taught at the Pan American
School of Porto Alegre. It was an
amazing experience. While I left
home in August during summer,
it was the winter season in Brazil
and very rainy with absolutely
no snow. Porto Alegre is actually
on the same latitude as southern
Africa. There wasn’t a good way to
dress. In the morning it would be
around 35 degrees Fahrenheit and
then after school, the temperature
would hover around 80 degrees!”
While student teaching at the Pan
American School, Megan worked
with eighth graders from South
America, Asia, Germany, and
Spain. When not in school, she
was able to live and travel with her
host family and their seven year old
daughter. “They were very nice. As
one of the wealthier families, they
even had nannies and drivers in
their employ,” she says.
Student teaching and living in
Brazil allowed Megan to learn the
culture and compare and contrast
the education system in both
countries. “The Brazilian public
school system is poor. Students are
not required to attend. There are
no scholarships available for gifted
students with financial need,” she
says. Those students whose families
can afford private schooling are
multilingual – speaking Portuguese
at home, English at school and
often learning several other
languages.
When she returned to the States
that fall, Megan began student
teaching at St. Joseph School in
Sylvania. With the support of a
seventh grade teacher, she created
lesson plans that allowed the
Sylvania students to interact and
learn with the students enrolled
at the Pan American School in
Brazil. Through e-Pals, an online
pen pal program, collaborative
group projects allowed the students
to hone communication skills
including writing formal emails,
friendly letter correspondence, and
formatting in Google Docs. “It was
a great experience for the students.
They took it very seriously because
someone else outside of their lived
experience was seeing their work,”
she says.
After receiving her bachelor’s
degree, the alumna is now teaching
English to high school students at
Carey Exempted Village Schools.

An advocate and entrepreneur
G
rowing up in
Cincinnati, Todd
Williams (’02,
BA) was immersed
in the small
business environment. Most of
his family worked at the business
his grandfather established. “That
experience instilled in me an
entrepreneurial spirit. It was a
successful business; my father and
his siblings all worked there and
raised families,” he says.
While his first foray into college
was not a rousing success (“I
promptly failed out of a public
university after 3 semesters”), he
decided to move to the northwest
Ohio region. After successfully
completing four semesters at a
community college, he found his
place at Lourdes. “The valuesbased education motivated me
and kindled a desire to make a
difference in society,” he says.
After receiving his bachelor’s
degree in business
administration, he applied and
was accepted to The University
of Toledo Law School. Shortly
after receiving his JD, he passed
the bar on his first try, was sworn
in, and two weeks later, he and
his wife Megan welcomed their
daughter Sophia.
Licensed in Ohio and Michigan,
Todd has already left an
indelible mark on this region.
He founded Williams Allwein
& Moser, LLC, a firm which was
in the forefront of energy law;
specifically as it pertains to solar
energy and energy efficiency.
Leader in PACE projects
Todd first was exposed to
energy law as a law fellow with
the Ohio Environmental Council
while waiting for his bar results.
Todd has served as legal advisor
for Toledo-Lucas County Port
Authority’s Northwest Ohio
BetterBuildings program, and
has played an integral role in the
legal structure and formation of
Toledo Ohio Advanced Energy
Improvement Corporation
which governs northwest Ohio’s
energy special improvement
(PACE) district. He is proud
of the accomplishments of the
Port Authority’s energy efficiency
building retrofit program; and
implementing more than $20
million in financed energy
efficiency projects. It is a positive
impact on the community, and the
environment.
Successful
implementation of
solar in Ohio
It is the direct impact on the
environment that draws Todd to
work with solar developers and
advocates. He has negotiated and
drafted power purchase agreements
resulting in over four megawatts
of installed solar energy in Ohio,
most notably the solar field
near the Toledo Zoo; served as a
national nonprofit solar advocate;
and published articles as a green
energy expert.
“It is hard to explain to my
daughter what I do for a living,
but now every time we go to the
zoo, she gets to see something I
worked on,” he says.
Supporting his alma
mater
“I believe in the Franciscan
education that Lourdes provides. It
inspired me and continues to drive
me in my personal and professional
life including how I want to raise
my family,” says Todd. A strong
Lourdes supporter, he has served
as president of the alumni business
branch, and as a member of the
university’s alumni association
board of directors – both as vice
president and president.
Branching out
After achieving success with
his own firm (annual sales of
$250,000 in the fourth year and
establishing a satellite office in
Columbus), Todd felt compelled
to devote more time to the practice
of environmental law. To that
end, he is now working as an
associate attorney for Shindler,
Neff, Holmes, Worline & Mohler,
LLP. As he points out, “working
for a firm rather than running
one allows me to accomplish
more in a field I am passionate
about while also broadening my
areas of expertise.” One thing is
certain. The talented advocate will
continue to positively impact this
region and its economy. U

Christina
Warner (’13) has been appointed
program director at St. Vincent
Medical Center’s Wound and
Hyper Baric Oxygen (HBO)
Center. The program is offered and
managed by Healogics, nationally
recognized experts in wound care.
Having worked for three decades
at St. Vincent Medical Center, a
Mercy Health member, Christina
has excelled in several positions
including benefit analyst, managed
care operations specialist, and most
recently, business development
market manager. While she wasn’t
considering an employment
change, a colleague and mentor
encouraged her to do so. “The
position with Healogics provides
more responsibilities and new
challenges. It really is a great fit.
As program director, I manage the
wound care team at St. Vincent
Hospital and work with colleagues
across the United States, ensuring
34
that our Healogics
program remains the
nation’s best and meets
our patients’ needs,”
she says.
At the Wound and
HBO Center, patients
whose wounds have
not successfully
healed utilizing more
traditional methods
are treated with hyper
baric oxygen, healing
the wound from the
inside out. Treatment
involves daily two-hour
sessions in an HBO
tank for a period of
30 days. Christine
has welcomed the
opportunity to work
more closely with
patients. “It is a
refreshing difference
and very rewarding,”
she adds.

franciscan society
Through their gift of $1,000 or greater, either in a single gift or
accumulated within the fiscal year, Franciscan Society members
have become a catalyst in the lives of Lourdes students.
Annual fund donors provide the foundation for giving at Lourdes
University. Through their generous support, they enable the
University to provide the opportunities to students that would
otherwise have been financially impossible. The gifts below are
for the fiscal year from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015.

endowed funds & scholarships
Lourdes is grateful to the many donors who have generously set up
scholarship funds to assist students.
Lourdes has two types of scholarships: Endowed, and Named or
Pass-through.
Endowed Scholarships:
Endowed scholarships last in perpetuity. The minimum dollar amount
needed to establish an endowed scholarship is $10,000. An endowed
scholarship can be established upfront with a gift of $10,000 or more,
or it may be paid through a pledge agreement not to exceed three
years. Once endowed, 5% of the three-year rolling average will be
awarded annually in scholarships to students. Subsequent donor
contributions to the fund go towards the principle, thus increasing the
awardable earnings. By university policy, the principle amount of an
endowment cannot be invaded.
Named (pass-through) Scholarships:
Named scholarships are awarded as contributions received. Funds do
not accumulate. The minimum amount necessary to establish a named
scholarship is $500 with a commitment to support the fund annually
for at least three years. Funds that do not have a balance will move
to inactive status until sufficient funds are acquired. Named funds
that are inactive for one or more years may be discontinued and/or
any balance may be rolled into another fund at the discretion of the
Financial Aid Office.
Scholarship Guidelines Established by Donor:
When setting up a new scholarship fund, several criteria and
guidelines should be considered. To facilitate the awarding, the more
general the guidelines, the easier it is to award the scholarship. All
guidelines are at the discretion of the Director of Financial Aid. A donor
may consider the following:
n Naming: A fund may be named at the discretion of the donor.
n Financial need: Students may or may not be required to show
financial need. This is determined through a student’s Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – a federal financial aid
form.
n Course of Study: The scholarship may be major-specific.
n Enrollment Status: It is preferable to award scholarships to full-time
students (12+ credit hours) because their financial need is the
greatest. Enrollment status options are part-time and full-time.
n Year of study: A year of study or a number of semester hours at
Lourdes successfully completed may be designated.
n GPA: Scholarship or a specific GPA or ACT/SAT score may be a
consideration. Lourdes does require that all students receiving
scholarships are in good academic standing.
n Additional Qualifications of Recipient: Donors may establish specific
criteria of scholarship recipients (i.e., graduated from a specific
high school) pending approval from the Director of Financial Aid.
n Acknowledgements: Students receiving scholarships must agree to
participate in thanking the donor(s).
For more information on setting up a scholarship, please contact Mike
George, director of development and annual fund, at 419-517-8990
or mgeorge@lourdes.edu.
