With the very recent publications of Pope Francis's Laudato Si: Care for
Our Common Home and the International Islamic Climate Change
Symposium's (IICCS) Islamic Declaration on Global Climate Change, the time is ripe for Muslims and Catholics to work more closely on ways that all might reverence God's gift of creation and call our brothers and sisters to action for the sake of our common home. Dr. Al-Hayani and Sr. Shannon will discuss Muslim and Catholic understandings of the goodness of God's creation, our special call as believers to treat the environment with respect and awe, and some practical ways for doing this together.
DR. AL-HAYANI earned her doctorate in Islamic Studies from the
University of Michigan and has taught, lectured and published widely on a variety of issues in the field, including Muslim understandings of science and religion.
SR. SHANNON SCHREIN, a Sylvania Franciscan, earned her doctorate in theology from Marquette University. Currently serving as the Director of the
MA in Theology at Lourdes University, she has shared her Franciscan way of life and her love of Jesus and the Scriptures with her students for more than forty years.
