During the UB Summer Program, students attended classes, visited universities, displayed their many talents, and had a magnificent time on their Educational Excursion to Philadelphia, PA. Fourteen senior students enjoyed various work-study positions across the LU campus including Campus Security, All Good Things, Residents Life, and the Colleges of Business, Arts & Sciences, Education, Nursing, and Art. Students visited Cleveland State University and the University of Toledo, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, took part in a Math/Science Day at Cedar Point and preformed in a Talent Show the final day of programming. Students boarded a bus the following morning headed for Philadelphia, PA. While there, we visited Lincoln Financial Field-home to the Philadelphia Eagles, Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell, National Constitution Center, Adventure Aquarium, Eastern State Penitentiary, took a big bus tour of the city and of course, visited the Liberty Bell. Students and staff of the program seemed to have had an excellent summer, getting to know one another and developing new skills. As soon as a candidate is hired parents and students will be notified. Seniors should have already received information in the mail that explains what should be done to register for the September ACT Test! Please understand that college applications will be completed throughout the next couple of months, you do not want to wait for a determination on acceptance because you don’t have an ACT test score available. Keep in mind that many colleges and universities have priority deadlines in early November and December for particular academic and need based scholarships!!! The first day of tutoring will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd for Woodward and Thursday, September 24th for Waite. Please make every effort to attend! I look forward to seeing all of your bright shinning faces! ~ Ms. Lisa Director’s Desk: Tonya Colbert Dear Upward Bound Students, Welcome Back to the 2015-2016 Academic Year! I hope that each of you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer vacation. As you begin this year full of limitless possibilities and opportunities, I encourage each of you to think about your academic goals for this year. Likewise, I ask that the goals that you set are both ambitious and attainable. That’s Right…AMBITIOUS! I want you to think of your brain as a bank account…an Intellectual Bank Account. Every time you go to class and actively participate, do your homework, review, study, and go to Upward Bound tutoring, you are making a deposit in to your Intellectual Bank Account! So, when it’s time to take a test, exam, an unexpected quiz, or write a paper, you can effortlessly make a withdrawal from your Intellectual Bank Account. It’s never too late to start to invest! Your academic wealth, depends on your actions to invest! We have a great year planned for you and are looking forward to all of your great academic achievements! I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming Upward Bound Ice Breakers and hearing all about your goals and everyone’s Intellectual Bank Accounts! Page 4 Upcoming Test: Saturday, October 24, 2015 Registration Deadlines: Regular Registration-September 18, 2015 *Late Registration-September 19-October 2, 2015 Next Test: Saturday, December 12, 2015 Registration Deadlines: I am sure many parents and students are wondering, “what type of testing will my student/I have to take in order to graduate?” The answer depends on the current grade level of the student being discussed. Students in the 2016 and 2017 graduating classes, will need to pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) and end of the course exams for American history and American government (ODE website). The OGT is divided into five parts (Reading, Writing, Math, Science, & Social Studies), one part is given each day for a week. Students must achieve a score of 400 or higher on each test to pass and be eligible for graduation in Ohio. As for our classes of 2018 and 2019, students have a different set of testing procedures that are required for graduation in Ohio. These students will be required to complete end of the course exams in the following subjects: English language arts I and II, Algebra I, Geometry, biology or physical science (class of 2018 only), American history, and American government. The tests will be administered during a window of time (spring) set by the Ohio Department of Education and will vary in length based upon how the school district choses to administer the tests (paper or online) or divide the tests (one session for 180 minutes or two sessions of 90 minutes). Sylvia Rombach Regular Registration-November 6, 2015 *Late Registration-November 7-20, 2015 As part of the 2016-2018 budget bill, the General Assembly directed the Ohio Department of Education to transition to new assessments for the 2015-2016 school year in mathematics and English language arts. Per the new law, Ohio will cease the use of PARCC tests. Instead, the Ohio Department of Education is working with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) – which has provided Ohio's science and social studies assessments – to develop Ohio’s math and English language arts tests. The new tests will use the same testing platform as other services that AIR already has offered Ohio. These will be Ohio’s tests and will align to Ohio’s standards.
