Time and place: M,T,W,F: 7:30-8:20 AM in JTB 130
Text: Calculus, 8th Ed., D. Varberg, E. J. Purcell and S. E. Rigdon
Course Description: We will cover chapters 7-12 and 18 of the text, developing ideas and
techniques of the differential and integral calculus in broader contexts. The course will begin
with a study of transcendental functions and their inverses, then move on to sophisticated
techniques of integration, indeterminate forms, infinite series, polar coordinates, ending
with an introduction to differential equations.
Homework: There will be 14 weekly homework assignments. For the problems assigned,
see the Assignment sheet and for the due dates see the Tentative schedule; they are
both on my web-page. Please do the problems in the assigned order, write clearly the
problem number and the page number and staple your homework. Late homework will not
be accepted, except under very special circumstances.
Quizzes: There will be 11 weekly quizzes held on Fridays, between 10-20 minutes each.
See the Tentative schedule on my web-page. The material covered by each quiz will be
announced in class. The quizzes are closed notes, closed books and no calculators. Each
quiz is worth 10 points. No make up quiz is allowed, however the lowest quiz grade will be
dropped.
Exams: There will be 3 exams during the semester (the lowest grade will be dropped) and
one final exam (see the Tentative schedule). All are written exams and will be held in
class (JTB 130). They are closed books, closed notes and no calculators. The final exam
will be comprehensive with some emphasis on the material not yet tested in the first three
in-class exams.
