White-tailed Deer Research Technicians (6): Northwest or South-central Missouri Agency: University of Missouri – Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences Location: Northwest or South-central Missouri Job Category: Temporary/Seasonal Positions Salary: $10 per hour; housing provided Start Date: 12/15/2014; negotiable Application Deadline: 09/22/2014 Description: The University of Missouri (MU) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) are recruiting 6 research technicians to study survival, recruitment, and movement patterns of white-tailed deer in northwest or south-central Missouri from 12/14 – 6/15. Among other duties, research technicians will be responsible for capturing and radio-marking deer, investigating mortalities, locating fawns, and interacting with Missouri landowners. Work will be conducted cooperatively with MU and MDC researchers. Technicians will also be responsible for data entry and will be required to work long hours outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions. A field vehicle will be provided to conduct research activities and housing is provided. Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Ecology or related field is required. Previous field experience capturing, handling, and radio-marking large mammals is highly preferred, but not required. Experience with Microsoft Office software is also necessary. Research Technicians must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and possess a strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills. Technicians must work effectively as part of a research team and are expected to be in constant communication with project collaborators. Research Technicians must be able to work in remote locations and conduct field work that is often strenuous. Applicants must be able to work long hours outdoors, including early mornings and late nights under adverse weather conditions and on weekends. White-tailed deer capture will occur during winter and research technicians will often have to wait in blinds for extended periods of time in cold weather until capture events occur. Research technicians must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
