University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point EXPLORE NEPAL & SRI LANKA CULTURAL LANDSCAPES Summer Seminar July 22 – August 12, 2015 PROGRAM: This seminar is carefully designed to provide a valuable firsthand experience of two South Asian non-western cultures with distinctive social, cultural, religious, and political histories that have created unique tapestries of rich cultural landscapes. Participants of the summer seminar to Nepal and Sri Lanka will visit and study several UNESCO World Heritage Sites of art and architecture, as well as explore some contemporary architecture of the 21st Century and everyday cultural and natural landscapes of both countries. The primary focus of the seminar is to develop a deep understanding and an appreciation of the rich historical backgrounds and their influences on shaping cultural landscapes in both Nepal and Sri Lanka. ACADEMIC DIRECTORS: The academic leader of the seminar is Dr. Nisha A. Fernando, Professor of Interior Architecture at UW-Stevens Point. Professor Fernando has Bachelor and Master’s degrees of Architecture from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and a Ph.D. in Architecture from the UW-Milwaukee. CREDITS: Participants may receive three credits for IA 391/591 (Interior Architecture elective) or Three credits for IA 310 (GDR: HU1 and NW; GEP: Art and GA; and/or Interior Architecture elective). Participants may also receive credits for International Studies in the Asian concentration (please contact Professor Brian Hale, Coordinator of International Studies & Assistant Professor of History). Independent Study may also be arranged. The course can be audited at the same price; however, the priority of the seats will be given for registered students. Graduate level credits are possible. ELIGIBILITY: The summer seminar is open to Interior Architecture majors, as well as to all other students who are interested in studying two non Western South Asian cultures to fulfill the GDR requirements for NW and/or HU1, to fulfill the GEP requirements for Art and/or GA, or to fulfill International Studies credits in the Asian concentration. COSTS: Approximately $5990-$6490 per student for the entire three weeks (based on 17 participants). The cost includes round trip airfare, room with breakfasts, dinners and lunches, ground transportation, entrance fees, three credits UW-Stevens Point Wisconsin resident undergraduate tuition, tours, and lectures. Graduate level credits are possible. $250 tuition surcharge for non residents; Minnesota residents may apply for reciprocity. There is a $50 application fee.
