POSITION TITLE: Agriculture Research Specialist, Primary Forest Products, Department of Forestry, University of

Kentucky.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree suitable for the program areas. Experience in the primary hardwood industry preferred.

SALARY: This is a full-time appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

LOCATION: This position will be stationed on the main campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, with a regional field office located at the Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability located in Eastern

Kentucky.

RESPONSIBILITES AND QUALIFICATIONS : The successful candidate will be expected to develop and participate in existing continuing education programs as well as provide one-on-one industrial/technical support. The focus will be to assess the needs of the primary forest industry from the forest through primary processing including drying. The successful candidate will develop education, training, support programs, and materials that provide solutions to real-world problems and help improve the forest industry’s competitive position. Potential subject areas include timber harvesting, log and lumber quality, sawmill operations, quality control, marketing, drying, safety, and certification. The individual is also expected to work as part of a Forestry Extension team that engages all sectors of the forestry and natural resource management communities, policy makers, the general public, and youth. The

Department of Forestry maintains a high degree of interaction with the forest products industry and aligned agencies and organizations and opportunities exist for partnering and obtaining external funding and in-kind services to develop and implement programs. The position requires in-state travel and strong communication and interpersonal skills to deliver programming and promote necessary collaboration within and outside the University.

The Department of Forestry is one of fourteen academic departments in the College of Agriculture, Food and

Environment. Departmental activities include undergraduate and graduate instruction in forestry and natural resources, research, and Cooperative Extension Service programs encompassing a wide range of forestry and natural resource management interests. The Department has significant off-campus resources available to support its mission including the nationally recognized Wood Utilization Center and Robinson Forest, both located at the
