OUTREACH

The Canjilon Ranger District is filling one permanent, full-time GS-454-9/11 Rangeland Management

Specialist. The duty station is in Canjilon, New Mexico and the position will serve as the Rangeland

Specialist for the Canjilon Ranger District. The Carson National Forest is made up of 6 ranger districts and encompasses approximately 1.5 million acres in beautiful northern New Mexico. If interested please fill out form below by February 20, 2015.

THE POSITION

The Canjilon Ranger District, of the Carson National Forest, is planning to fill a Range Management

Specialist vacancy. The position is located on a Forest Service Unit (District) in Canjilon, New

Mexico. The position develops the overall rangeland management plans, as well as utilizing resource management goals and objectives while implementing on the ground management decisions. The incumbent will be responsible for a multiple-use rangeland resource area with a lot of diversity and challenges. The Rangeland specialist will work independently administering an ecosystem based rangeland management program and related resource coordination with other specialists as well as administration of permits. The incumbent will prepare long and short-term plans based on rangeland resource needs and plans rangeland improvement projects. This individual will also serve as an interdisciplinary team member and occasional leader of planning teams for management activities and will provide support to Forest Plan monitoring and Forest Plan revision. The Rangeland

Management Specialist needs to have strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to represent the range resource in a team environment. This position should have the ability to manage and account for project-level budgets and have some working knowledge of geographic information systems and statistical database systems.

Duty Station Specifics :

The administrative site for the Canjilon Ranger District is located in the town of Canjilon in Rio

Arriba County, approximately 50 miles north of Espanola (pop. 8,500) and 60 miles south of

Pagosa Springs, Colorado, (pop. 9,000) the nearest sizeable towns. Access to Canjilon is via U.S.

Highway 84. Tierra Amarilla is the county seat of Rio Arriba County and intimately involved with public land management. As such, Canjilon Ranger District serves as the primary contact for many issues and discussions brought forward through County Government.

FOREST SERVICE PROGRAMS/WORK:

Recreation, range management, watershed enhancement, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement, and fire comprise the major programs on the Canjilon District. The timber products program is currently limited to providing fuel wood and small products for both the local and adjacent communities, and there is an increasing need for more intensive forest management on the district to improve forest health and reduce fire risk.

Community Information:

CLIMATE/ELEVATION/LANDSCAPE TYPE:

The climate is typical of higher mountain villages in northern New Mexico. In an average winter, snowfall events of 8-12 inches are not uncommon. Nighttime temperatures of 5-10 degrees below zero occur for a 2-3 week period in the middle of winter. Springs tend to be fairly mild with some rain and at times snow. Summer temperatures seldom exceed 90 degrees. Autumn is again mild and very colorful.

Elevation ranges from desert shrub grasslands at 6,500 feet to alpine high mountain meadow-spruce fir at 11,000 feet.

COMMUNITY POPULATION/DIVERSITY/GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The population in the Canjilon area is approximately 300 people, which is characteristic of the many small towns within the Upper Chama Valley. Hispanics comprise the majority of the population, with most of the residents being descendants of the original Spanish land grant families.

There is a strong cultural tie to the land by most residents. Residents are very proud of their cultural background and history. Most families have lived in the area for many generations.

COMMUNITY ECONOMY/HOUSING COSTS/COST OF LIVING/LOCAL JOB MARKET:

Ranching, construction companies, state/county government, and the local school system are the primary employers. A tourism based services, economy continues to grow within the area with

Cumbres-Toltec Scenic Railroad, Heron, El Vado, Abiquiu Reservoirs and numerous trout streams as major destinations during the summer. Hunting, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular during the fall/winter. Much of the local job market tends to be seasonal. Housing is readily available within a thirty mile radius and costs vary widely, but usually range from $75,000 -

$250,000, depending on location and availability. The cost of living is high due to distance from facilities.

FACILITIES/HOSPITALS/SCHOOLS/SHOPPING:

Tierra Amarilla, Chama and Abiquiu provide the nearest medical facilities with small rural health clinics. The nearest hospitals are located in Espanola, Pagosa Springs, and Santa Fe, about 50, 60 and 85 miles from Canjilon, respectively.

Schools in the area include the Tierra Amarilla Elementary School (K-5), Tierra Amarilla Middle

School (6-8) and Escalante High School (9-12). Tierra Amarilla is about 15 miles north of

Canjilon.

There are no stores in Canjilon. The closest convenience store is in Cebolla (about 5 miles), and the closest grocery store is in Chama. The nearest large shopping facilities are located in Espanola,

Pagosa Springs and Santa Fe.

The closest banks are in Tierra Amarilla and Chama, with several more in Espanola.

RECREATIONAL/ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting are the primary recreational opportunities in the Canjilon area. The District has three maintained campgrounds that serve both the local residents, as well as visitors from Espanola, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. The area is well known for summer recreational opportunities at the Canjilon and Trout Lakes where brook, brown and rainbow trout are caught. Canjilon is located within 25 miles of Abiquiu, Heron and El Vado reservoirs that provide excellent year round fishing and boating opportunities for rainbow, brown, and lake trout, kokanee salmon. In addition, Abiquiu reservoir offers warm water fisheries opportunities. During the winter, snowmobiling and some cross country skiing opportunities exist.

Numerous ski basins can be tapped within a 2-3 hour drive. Other forms of entertainment are available in Espanola, Pagosa Springs and Santa Fe.

The magnificent mountain scenery and cool summer temperatures lure visitors to enjoy the peace and quiet found within multiple Wilderness Areas and to enjoy fishing, hunting, camping and hiking. Some of the finest alpine downhill and cross country skiing in the US is also found on the

Carson National Forest as well as snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The cultural influence, art, and architecture from the Native American pueblos and Spanish American villages of northern New

Mexico are unique to this part of the nation and world. Taos and Santa Fe have world-class art communities. Special evenings in art, music, dance and theater occur frequently. There is camping, hunting, fishing and hundreds of miles of sparkling clean mountain streams and numerous lakes, many of which are stocked with native trout. For other entertainment, Espanola, Los Alamos, Santa

Fe, Taos, or Albuquerque is a short drive a way.

ABOUT THE REGION:

The Southwestern Region consists of 20.6 million acres. There are six national forests in Arizona, five national forests and one national grassland in New Mexico, and one national grassland each in

Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle. The Southwestern US is one of the most diverse and rapidly growing regions of the country. The Region's programs represent the full complexity of resource management in the Forest Service, with an emphasis on customer service, partnerships and contributing to the Southwestern quality of life.

Access/Nearest Airport/Nearest Big City:

The nearest airports are in Taos, NM (approximately 90 miles northeast) and Santa Fe

(approximately 90 miles south). The Albuquerque International Airport is approximately 150 miles south of Canjilon. Espanola is the nearest city (approximately 55 miles south). Santa Fe is larger than Espanola and Albuquerque is a larger city with a population of over 250,000.

CARSON NATIONAL FOREST:

The Carson National Forest is one of five National Forests in New Mexico. Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.5 million acres covered by the Carson National

Forest. Elevations rise from 6,000 feet to 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest in New Mexico.
