Forest Resource Management and Economics
Position Description: This is a half-time research assistantship. The research project involves an
analysis of trade-offs (opportunity costs) of managing areas of the Clemson Experimental Forest for
various conflicting resource uses. The Clemson Experimental Forest consists of 17,500 acres,
located adjacent to campus, dedicated to education, research and demonstration. The Forest is
managed strictly for perpetual sustained or improved yield of multiple products. The Forest is
solely supported by self-generated revenue. Complex use issues have developed over time and
the research objective will be identify and quantify the costs and benefits generated from
alternative resource uses. Research tools will be optimization methods (especially mathematical
programming), economic theory, and applied forest management. The assistantship includes a
student stipend of $20,000-$21,000/ calendar year + tuition (fees and health insurance not included).
Qualifications: The student should have some experience with optimization methods,
microeconomics, forest management, and finance. A B.S. in forestry or equivalent is required. This
is a unique opportunity to gain experience on management of university forests. Student must be able
to work independently, but also collaborate with various interest groups. Applicants will be evaluated
based on a combination of GPA, GRE scores, experience, and interest. Position will begin in January
2015.
